Women's Basketball Falls Short at Bryn Mawr

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Wilson college women's basketball team traveled to Bryn Mawr to face off against the Owls in non-conference action. The Owls defeated the Phoenix 82-51.

While the Owls surpassed the Phoenix on the scoreboard, the Phoenix bench had depth; several players made significant contributions. Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) led the team in scoring with 18 total points. She also had 1 assist and 4 steals. Sophomore Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) led the team with 7 rebounds. Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) and junior Amber Jones (Waldorf, Md.) had 8 and 7 points respectively.

Day scored a lay-up, making the Phoenix first to score. The scoring was back and forth up through the second half of the first quarter when the Owls started to pull away, putting points up inside the paint. The Phoenix started the second quarter down 7 and after two good free throws and a lay-up from Day, they closed in within three points of their opponents, putting the score at 17-20. The Owls' offense was strong though, and Erica Dwyer had three 3-pointers in the second quarter alone. Henderson, Jones, and Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl) each put points on the scoreboard for the Phoenix in the third quarter, Purvis with a lay-up in the paint just six seconds before the buzzer which gave the Phoenix the last bucket of the quarter. Still, the Phoenix were trailing 26 points behind their competitors at the start of the fourth. The visiting Phoenix scored 13 points to the Owls 18 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to close the gap and the game ended in favor of the hosting Owls 82-51.

The Crusaders offense was paced by Erica Dwyer with 23 points and Odinaka Oranekwu with 16 points.

With the loss, the Phoenix move to 1-1 on the season while the Owls go to 1-2.

Wilson will be back in action on Tuesday, November 22 at Cedar Crest College.
