Hornets Sting Phoenix in Men's Hoops

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Wilson College men's basketball team took on Shenandoah University in the opening game of the Body Renew Classic hosted by Shenandoah University. The Phoenix fell to the Hornets by a final score of 82-47.

The Hornets (2-0) opened the game on a 9-2 run, capped off by a 3-point jumper. Senior
Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) nailed a 3-point shot of his own and a layup by junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) pulled the Phoenix (0-2) within 11-7 a few minutes later. Just beyond the midway point of the first half, the Phoenix trailed 17-11, but a 7-2 run highlighted by a 3-pointer by sophomore Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) pulled the team within 19-18. The teams would play mostly even the rest of the half and the Hornets would take a 34-26 lead into the break.

The second half would see the Phoenix offense go cold as the team managed only 6 field goals after the break and went scoreless for nearly eight minutes. The Hornets would take advantage and use a 16-0 run to push their lead to 63-37 with less than seven minutes to go. The Phoenix would get no closer as the Hornets went on for the 82-47 win.

Adams led the Phoenix offensively with 11 points and added 8 rebounds. Nelson and freshmen
Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) and Jordan Grapes (Romney, Wv, Hampshire) each tallied 8 points in the loss.

Wilson will return to action tomorrow in the consolation game of the Body Renew Classic. The Phoenix will face off against Averett, who lost to Hood College 79-72, at 2:00 p.m.
