Phoenix Fly Past Crusaders in Opener

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team opened the season with a 77-45 victory at home against Christendom College.

Sophomore Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) led the Phoenix with 25 points, 15 of those were 3-pointers. Guard Ashley Henderson,  (Upper Marlboro, Md.) also a returning sophomore, was the second-highest scorer for the Phoenix with 17 total points. Coming in third for points this evening was Sophomore Lindsey Purvis with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

The Phoenix came out with instensity from the start. They outscored the Crusaders 20-10 in the first quarter. Sophomore Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa) put a 3-point goal on the scoreboard, and senior Teniera Prioleau (Baltimore, Md.) made an impressive 3-pointer just as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter. The Phoenix started the second quarter with a 10 point lead and they finished it 24 points ahead of their opponent. The Crusaders continued attempts to push against the Phoenix defense, but the home team forced six turnovers in the third alone, and maintained a 26 point lead despite the Crusaders scoring 13-15 against the Phoenix that quarter. The Phoenix continued to shine in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Katelynn Gilbert (Thousand Palms, Calif.) was last to put points on the scoreboard for the Phoenix, throwing a lay-up against the backboard and in the net with 16 seconds left. The Phoenix finished out the game with a 32 point final margin of victory.

The Crusaders offense was paced by Bryn Burgess with 13 points and Elizabeth Ford with 10 points.

With the win, the Phoenix move to 1-0 on the season while the Crusaders fall to 0-1.

Wilson will be back in action at home on Wednesday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. versus Cairn University.
