Men's Hoops Drops Opener to McDaniel

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Wilson College men's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season on the road against McDaniel College in a non-conference tilt. The host Green Terror defeated the Phoenix by a score of 72-55.

The Phoenix (0-1) first bucket of the season came on a three-pointer by junior
Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley) which tied the game at 3-3 in the early going. After a couple of buckets by the Green Terror (1-0) a three-pointer by senior Marquis Nelson (Hagerstown, Md. , Edison High School ) tied the game at 8-8. The hosts when then go on a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 advantage midway through the opening half. Eventually, the Green Terror would extend their first half lead to 18 points, but the Phoenix would chip away at that lead and finish the half on a 6-0 run, with all 6 points coming from freshman Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park), to pull within 31-25.

During the second half the Phoenix would pull within 4 points on a pair of Nelson free throws near the fifteen minute mark, but a 17-3 run by the Green Terror would extend the lead to 54-36 by the midway point of the second half. The two teams would exchange baskets for most of the remainder of the half and the Green Terror closed out the victory by a final score of 72-55.

For the game, the Phoenix shot 17 of 44 from the field for a 38.6% shooting percentage, but were just 4 of 16 from behind the arc for 25%. Adams and Nelson led the way offensively with 14 and 13 points respectively. Adams also led the team with 5 rebounds and 3 blocks.

Wilson will return to action on Friday, November 18 at Shenandoah University.
