Men's Soccer Barely Loses to Lions

READING, Pa. – The Wilson College men's soccer team travelled to Reading, Pa., where they played a tightly contested match against NEAC opponent, Penn State Berks. A goal in the second period gave the hosting Nittany Lions a 1-0 victory over the Phoenix.

From the start, it was a close match. The Phoenix (4-6-2, 3-3-2 NEAC) had the first shot of the game from freshman forward, Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand). Soon after Azim's shot, the Nittany Lions (5-6, 5-2 NEAC) answered with a shot of their own. Defense and goalkeeping helped keep the match close, and Phoenix goalkeeper Michael Martin made a crucial save off a header shot taken in the aftermath of a corner kick. Azim took the Phoenix's second shot of the period, but it was blocked before it could reach the goal. The Lions outshot the Phoenix 7-2 first half. Their edge finally gave them a goal at the 42:25 minute mark of the first period, leaving the Phoenix trailing 0-1 at half time.

The Nittany Lion's goalkeeper saw more action from the Phoenix in the second period, as the Phoenix matched the Lions 5-5 in shots for the second half. Shane Ray (Sharptown, Md.), Jacob Benford (Rockwood, Pa. ), and Azim each had shots the second half, but none were able to send the ball to the back of the net. In a last grinding effort to tie the game, with less than one minute left, the Phoenix's Oliver Perry (London, England) ripped a shot that went high, and the game ended with a 1-0 victory for the Nittany Lions.
 
The Lions maintained only a slight 4-3 edge on corner kicks, and outshot the Phoenix 12-7.
 
The Phoenix will be in Lancaster, Pa. tomorrow to match-up against Lancaster Bible College at 4:00 p.m.
