Mustangs Corral Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted North Eastern Athletic Conference foe Morrisville State College this afternoon. The conference leading Mustangs defeated the Phoenix by an 8-0 margin.

The Mustangs (11-2, 10-1 NEAC) jumped on top of the Phoenix (5-8-2, 4-3-1 NEAC) with a goal by Julian Gonzalez just before the twenty minute mark of the opening half. The visitors added another goal just six minutes later as Joe Sheehan connected to put the Mustangs up 2-0. The Phoenix put three shots on goal in the half as freshmen Raihan Azim (Auckland, New Zealand, One Tree Hill) and Shane Ray (Sharptown, Md., Mardela), as well as sophomore Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford ) took aim at the Mustangs goalkeeper, but each shot was denied. Defense was the story for both teams the remainder of the half and the Mustangs headed to the break up 2-0.

A pair of early second half goals by the Mustangs increased the lead to 4-0 after less than ten minutes had ticked off the clock. Another pair of goals scored less than a minute apart midway through the half, pushed the lead to 6-0 and the Mustangs finished the match by tacking on two more late goals to make the final score 8-0.

For the match, the Mustangs out shot the Phoenix 18-4 and held a slight 3-1 edge in penalty kicks.

Wilson will finish off the regular season next weekend with crucial matches versus SUNY Cobleskill and SUNY Poly with possible NEAC post-season hopes on the line.
