Women's Soccer Falls In Home Opener To Mary Baldwin

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's soccer team hosted Mary Baldwin for the home opener on Labor Day, but the visitors spoiled the scenario with a clean sheet against the Phoenix. The Fighting Squirrels scored one late in the first half and added another midway through the second to blank the Blue and White in their first game on the new turf.

How It Happened
  • Wilson had the early momentum as it outshot Mary Baldwin 5-2 in the opening 20 minutes. Claire Thompson (FY, Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) had an early crack at the goal with Dakoda Kraenbring making the save for the Squirrels in the fourth minute. Eight minutes later Ashlynn Simmons (FY, Gerrardstown, W.Va. / Musselman) fired another shot on target that had to be stopped by Kraenbring. The Phoenix had two more prime opportunities in the 19th and 20th minutes as fouls left them with free kicks just outside the box, but attempts by Shaylee McGlinchey (FY, New Market, Md. / Oakdale) and Simmons just missed to the right and over the top, respectively.
  • The Squirrels turned up the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the first half. Rory Patchett gave Madison Ebersole (Jr., Big Pool, Md. / Clear Springs) her first test of the day in the 37th minute, but Wilson was unable to clear the ball after the save and Mary Baldwin broke through just 39 seconds later as Molly Ludwig connected with Joelle Harre for a one-on-one chance up the middle and a 1-0 lead. Ebersole was called upon twice more in the final five minutes and made the save both times to keep the score locked at 1-0 at the break.
  • MBU kept testing the Phoenix back line and Bella Scarlato (So., Severn, Md. / Glen Burnie), who played the second half in goal, stopped a pair of shots in the 53rd and 58th minutes. Unfortunately for the Blue and White, Hare and Ludwig connected again, this time with Hare finding Ludwig on a centering pass from the left near the end line, for a 2-0 lead in the 67th minute. Wilson had a few opportunities with Thompson finding chances on breakaways, but was unable to get a shot thanks to a suffocating Squirrels back line. Breanna Oliviero (So., Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) also had a solid chance that saw Amelia Cross make the save for Mary Baldwin in the 82nd minute.
