Cottone's Goal Helps Wilson Draw With Mounties

(CRESSON, Pa.) – The season finally got under way for the Wilson men's soccer team as it battled Mount Aloysius to a draw on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix struck first late in the first half before the Mounties answered early in the second to force the tie.

How It Happened
  • The hosts had the early momentum with four shots in the opening 23 minutes with Gerson Navarro (Sr., Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park) making a pair of saves between the sticks to keep the game scoreless. Wilson's offense eventually warmed up and forced a corner kick in the 26th, but the Blue and White were unable to get a shot from it. The Phoenix attack was limited to one shot in the first half, but they made it count as Wes Reall Jr. (So., Carlisle, Pa. / Big Spring) connected with Tyler Cottone (Sr., Milford, Pa. / Delaware Valley) with 48 seconds left in the half for the 1-0 lead.
  • The offense was able to feed off the momentum and found more chances early in the second. Jace Williams (Sr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) and Bryson Curtis (Sr., Fairfax, Va. / Oakton) were the benefactors with both getting shots on goal with saves made by Mounties keeper Sam Denchfield.
  • As the second third was about to close, Mount Aloysius found the equalizer by way of Martin Donner. Wilson had solid chances to go back up with Cottone and Williams getting attempts on target. Williams also placed one on the crossbar.
Inside The Numbers
  • Wilson was outshot 15-7 overall, but shots on goal were more even at a 7-5 Mounties advantage.
  • Corners favored Mount Aloysius 13-4.
  • Cottone's goal was just the second of his career. He also found the back of the net in a 1-1 draw against Notre Dame on October 21 last season.
  • Navarro made six saves on the day, the most in a single game since his rookie season.
  • The draw is the first result for the Phoenix in a season opener since the 2018 campaign.
