Softball Splits With Blazers

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson softball team capped a busy weekend with a split with local rival Hood in a non-conference twin bill Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix dropped Game 1 in a close battle before getting a hot start in Game 2 to jump up on the Blazers and hold off the visitors for the win.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 1, Hood 3
Game 2 – Wilson 5, Hood 2

Venue: WC Softball Field

Records: Wilson 21-8-1, Hood 11-20-1

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • It was a low scoring affair with the Blazers posting solo runs in the first, third and seventh innings. Wilson had chances multiple times, but left two stranded in scoring position in the fourth and the bases loaded in the fifth. The Phoenix eventually plated one as Emily Randalls (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Brooke Leedy (So., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg), but couldn't get any closer.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Most of the damage done came in the first inning as Wilson took advantage of a pair of Hood errors to score four runs. Kiera O'Brine (Jr., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) reached on one of them and eventually scored after Madison Briggs (Sr., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) was hit by a pitches with the bases loaded. Addison Woods (FY, North East, Md. / Tome School) grounded in Jenna Weaver (So., Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff) for a 2-0 lead, and an error one play later allowed Sydney Hartle (So., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro) and Briggs to score and give the Phoenix a 4-0 lead.
  • The score remained dormant until the bottom of the third when a throwing error allowed Hartle to score. Hartle initially reached by hitting her third double in as many games. The Blazers eventually got on the board with a two RBI double in the fifth, but the Phoenix were otherwise unscathed in securing the win and the split.
Inside The Numbers
  • Julia Wilkes (So., Abingdon, Md. / John Carroll) started Game 2 and recorded the win after allowing just two runs on six hits. She struck out seven in 5.0 innings of work. She is no 6-1 on the year.
  • Elena Worthington (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) relieved Wilkes and allowed just one hit while retiring the other six batters faced to record her second save of the year.
  • Hartle finished the day 3-for-6 with two runs and a double. She now has extra base hits in the past four games which includes three games in a row with a double.
