(BRADFORD, Pa.) – Alyvia Henneman's (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) second half hat trick helped Wilson hold off Pitt Bradford in women's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening. The junior attack scored all three goals in the final 20 minutes of action as the Phoenix won their second game of the season.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 6, Pitt Bradford 4
Venue: Rathburn Field
Records: Wilson 2-9, Pitt Bradford 6-5
How It Happened
- It was a defensive game from the start with neither team able to light up the scoreboard until the second quarter. Both teams had chances with the Phoenix taking six shots to Bradford's four. The Panthers were only able to get one shot on goal, however, which came on a free position attempt that was saved by Kaelyn Goff (Jr., Union Bridge, Md. / Francis Scott Key) and resulted in her recording her 300th career save.
- The second quarter remained a defensive stalemate until the 3:45 mark when Pitt's Haley Carlo scored. It appeared the Panthers would take the lead into the halftime break until the Phoenix were awarded a free position attempt. Ellisa Gamby-Mickey (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) made it count and pulled Wilson even with 22 seconds before the half.
- The Blue and White made the most of the halftime adjustments and wasted no time in getting the lead. Gamby-Mickey won the draw and 15 seconds later Alaina Marek (Jr., Bealeton, Va. / Liberty) found the back of the net on a Finley Vandevander (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) assist. A penalty aided Wilson as Sadie Fike (Jr., McClure, Pa. / Mifflin County) scored to make it 3-1 just 2:25 later with Vandevander adding a helper once again.
- After Bradford scored to get back within one, Henneman scored her first of the day with 4:49 left in the third. Wilson won the ensuing draw and Henneman added her second just 41 seconds later for a 5-2 lead. Bradford added the next two goals with the last coming at 4:28 left in the game, but the Phoenix defense were able to prevent any shots by the Panthers the rest of the way. Henneman caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball, and scored with 36 seconds left to ice the game.
Inside The Numbers
- Henneman's hat trick was her second of the season and puts her into double digits with 11 for the year. She's scored in three of the past four games.
- Vandevander provided two key assists, but she excelled defensively with four caused turnovers and five ground balls. Henneman and Riley Lemay (Jr., Saugerties, N.Y.) also added five ground balls each.
- Goff once again finished with a save percentage over .500 as she made seven stops.
