Softball Splits With Dickinson

(CARLISLE, Pa.) – The Wilson softball team made the short trip up I-81 and came away with a split against local rival Dickinson on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix nearly came back to defeat the Red Devils in a close opener, but got the better of their northern neighbors in the nightcap.

The Basics

Score: Game 1 – Wilson 4, Dickinson 5
Game 2 – Wilson 8, Dickinson 2

Venue: Dickinson Park

Records: Wilson 9-5, Dickinson 3-5

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • Wilson got the upper hand first with a pair of runs in the first. Kiera O'Brine (Jr., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) led off with a double and was followed with another double from Emily Randalls (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) for the first run. Randalls eventually circled around on a base hit by Kayla Talbert (Jr., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown / Saint Peter's).
  • Dickinson eventually got on the scoreboard with one run in the third. The Red Devils proceeded to take the lead with four runs in the fifth. Extra base hits got the Phoenix back within striking distance as Randalls tripled to center to start the top of the seventh. Katelyn Keller (So., Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) drove her home before scoring herself on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Hartle (So., Keedysville, Md. / Boonsboro). The come back ended there, however, as Dickinson retired the next two batters to end the game.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • The Phoenix started off hot once again with some two out lightning in the first. Keller reached on a base hit and moved to second before scoring on a base hit by Hartle. Keller helped make it 2-0 two innings later when she drove in Randalls on a liner to left field. Keller wasn't finished as she scored on a wild pitch in the fifth. Hartle followed suit and made it 4-1 on a Talbert ground out.
  • Addison Woods (FY, North East, Md. / Tome School) gave Wilson an insurance run in the sixth. She led off with a single to center and eventually scored on an O'Brine base hit. O'Brine put the finishing touches on the scoring with a base hit to left to score Woods and Alaina Smith (FY, Bellefonte, Pa. / Bellefonte) in the seventh.
Inside The Numbers
  • Keller was strong once again as she went 4-for-9 on the day. She drove in a pair while scoring three times herself.
  • O'Brine had an excellent day as she reached base five times and went a combined 4-for-8 at the plate. She scored once in the opener and drove in three in Game 2.
  • Randalls joined the aforementioned duo by reaching base safely five times. She was 2-for-4 in each game while scoring three runs with one RBI. She recorded her third triple in the past three days in Game 1.
  • Hartle reached base three times in each game. She was 2-for-2 in the opener with a 1-for-2 follow up.
  • Julia Wilkes (So., Abingdon, Md. / John Carroll) got the win in Game 2. She allowed two runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
