(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The home opener for the Wilson softball team was unkind as it fell in both games of a twin bill against Southern Virginia on Thursday afternoon. The Phoenix gave a scare to the Knights with a brilliant comeback attempt in the opener before being shutout by the visitors in Game 2.
The Basics
Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 9, Southern Virginia 18
Game 2 – Wilson 0, Southern Virginia 11
Venue: Wilson Softball Field
Records: Wilson 8-4, Southern Virginia 5-11
How It Happened
- Game 1 saw the Knights jump out to an 8-0 through the top of the third before the Blue and White answered with one on a Katelyn Keller (So., Orrtanna, Pa. / Gettysburg) bunt single to score Emily Randalls (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern York) in the bottom of the third.
- The Phoenix bats took to the fire in the fourth as they nearly tied the game. Addison Woods (FY, North East, Md. / Tome School) doubled to right center to score Brooke Leedy (So., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg) and Jenna Weaver (So., Camp Hill, Pa. / Cedar Cliff). Two batters later, Keller followed suit with a two-bag liner down the third base line to score Caitlin Oliviero (Jr., Wernersville, Pa. / Conrad Weiser) and Woods. Weaver got into the mix once again with a base hit to right center to score Keller and Randalls.
- Unfortunately for the Phoenix, the SVU lineup proved too powerful as they kept the pressure on with 10 runs over the last three frames. Keller hit a sacrifice fly to score Randalls again in the sixth and Hannah Berger (FY, Rome, Pa. / Northeast Bradford) belted a pinch hit solo home run in the seventh to set up the final score.
- In Game 2, it was Southern Virginia's battery that got the job done as it limited Wilson to two hits. The Knights scored runs in four of five innings to end the game in five.
Inside The Numbers
- Randalls had an incredible opening game at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with two triples. She also reached safely in Game 2 with a walk to keep her reached-base streak alive at 12 games. She also scored three runs in the opener.
- Woods and Keller had multiple-hit games in the opener.
- Weaver hit safely in both games and reached base five times with three walks.
