Haley's Hat Trick, Golden Goal Sends Wilson To Semifinals

(IMMACULATA, Pa.) – Haley Hamrick's (Jr., Taneytown, Md. / Union Bridge) overtime goal lifted No. 5 Wilson over No. 4 Immaculata in the first round of the United East Championship on Tuesday evening. Conditions were ideal for a crisp night of competition and it showed throughout as both squads needed more than 60 minutes to decide a winner for the second time in a week.

This time it was the Phoenix who came out on top with a total team effort that featured a hat trick by Hamrick, a stellar save by Erin Sullivan (Jr., Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) on a penalty stroke, and a come-from-behind win as Wilson trailed by two goals.

The Basics

Score: No. 5 Wilson 4, No. 4 Immaculata 3 (OT)

Venue: Draper Walsh Stadium

Records: No. 5 Wilson 6-8, No. 4 Immaculata 6-11

How it Happened
  • The high scoring affair started with Wilson lighting up the scoreboard first with a goal nine minutes into the game on a penalty corner. After the insert, Olivia Fantazzi (FY, Strasburg, Pa. / Lancaster County Day) fired the ball into a swarm of players which ping ponged its way to Kate Seymour (Sr., Churchton, Md. / Southern) in front of the cage. Seymour deflected it onto Hamrick on the right post who was able to squeeze it by the goal line by a hair for the score.
  • As the saying goes, turnabout is fair play and shortly after it was evident when Immaculata was awarded a penalty corner. The Mighty Macs made it count as Alexis Andrada pulled the hosts even with a hard shot from the left wing three minutes later.
  • The score remained there through halftime, but Immaculata didn't wait long to change that as Andrada scored the brace 76 seconds into the third. This time the worked her way around the defense and was able to find a small opening from the right side and take it to the far post on a tough angle shot. The Mighty Macs weren't done and doubled their lead 10 minutes later when Morgan Barnes scored. Andrada was looking for the natural hat trick with a shot right before that with Sullivan making the save, but the rebound went to Barnes who was able to hammer it home.
  • The Phoenix weren't discouraged and responded promptly with another penalty corner setting up their second goal. Once again, it was Seymour who connected with Hamrick who zipped one by the Macs goalkeeper from the left side just 28 seconds after the Macs scored. Déjà vu almost appeared in a different way, however, as Immaculata was awarded a penalty stroke just 31 seconds after that. Andrada, who scored both goals in last week's game including the game winner on a penalty stroke in overtime, was picked to take this one as well. Sullivan made the stop and it gave the Phoenix a proverbial shot of adrenaline.
  • Immaculata was able to get off a couple of early shots in the fourth, one which went wide and another that was saved by Sullivan. From there, it was all Wilson which put the pressure on the Macs back line throughout the final 10 minutes. Seven shots and four penalty corners followed with no luck. However, the seventh set up the eighth as Mikayla Petersen (So., Glen Burnie, Md. / North County) had a shot that was blocked, but the ball found its way to Hamrick. This time Hamrick centered it and Danica Frushour (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Westminster) was able to go five hole on the Macs keeper to pull Wilson even at 3-3 with 2:28 left in regulation.
  • In overtime, it was Hamrick's defensive play that set the golden goal in motion. With Immaculata putting pressure on the Phoenix defense, a centering pass was intercepted by Hamrick in near the top of the circle. Running up the field, she was able to find Seymour near midfield. Seymour was then able to dodge a few defenders before finding Hamrick for the return trip of the give-and-go. A control touch allowed a second, and Hamrick took the keeper through the pads again for the game winner.
Inside The Numbers
  • Hamrick's career night featured seven points on her first career hat trick and an assist. She now has 15 on the season with six goals and three helpers.
  • Seymour's triple dishes giver her five assists on the season and 21 points.
  • Wilson outshot Immaculata 21-15 overall and 15-8 in shots on goal. The Phoenix got stronger as the night went on as they increased their shot count from the previous quarter by two each quarter.
  • Wilson also won the penalty corner count 8-6. It was in favor of the Macs 5-2 at halftime with Wilson putting the pressure by getting four in the fourth.
  • Sullivan made five saves on the night, none bigger than the penalty stroke in the third to keep the game with a 3-2 score.
  • Frushour's goal was her second of the season.
  • Wilson now leads the all-time series with Immaculata 6-3. Teams have alternated wins over the last six games.
