(LANCASTER, Pa.) – A slow start hurt Wilson as it fell to Lancaster Bible in the men's soccer conference opener on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers picked up goals in the 4th, 14th, and 18th minutes en route to the win over the Phoenix.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Lancaster Bible 4
Venue: Herr Stadium
Records: Wilson 2-6-2, 0-1-0; Lancaster Bible 4-3-2, 1-0-0
How It Happened
- The Chargers opened the scoring as Ben Nolt put in his own rebound after his first shot was saved by Logan Neves (Jr., Fredericksburg, Va. / Colonial Forge) in the fourth minute. On the restart Wilson had a chance to equalize, but Jace Williams' (Jr., Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) attempt was saved by LBC's Micah Dressler. From there the hosts put the pressure back on and fired off four more shots before adding their second goal on a Zach Coryell shot.
- Coryell wasn't finished and made it 3-0 four minutes later. LBC's final goal came in the 44th off the leg of Emilio Mejia.
- Wilson didn't go away quietly and had some opportunities come in the second, but none were able to reach their mark. Omar Cortez (So., Columbia, Tenn. / Spring Hill) and Landon Howe (Jr., Martinsburg, W.Va. / St. Maria Goretti) both took shots in the opening five minutes of the second which were wide left and saved, respectively.
- The Phoenix perhaps had their best chances in the final 10 minutes when they rattled off four-straight shots. Andrew Bailey (Jr., Mount Airy, Md. / Linganore) started the push with a take that was wide left. Emmanuel Colon Gonzalez (Jr., Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico / Santa Maria) followed before another Bailey shot went high. Colon Gonzalez gave Wilson its last chance, but went high to the left.
Inside The Numbers
- LBC led the shot chart 28-11 overall and 14-3 in shots on goal.
- Neves made four saves and Gerson Navarro (Jr., Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park) added five more in the second half.
