Women's Soccer Draws With Altoona In Season Opener

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's soccer team came out firing on all cylinders in Friday's season opener, building a two-goal lead against Penn State Altoona in the opening 21 minutes. Unfortunately the Phoenix had to settle for the draw as the Nittany Lions scored a pair of late goals to pull even with three goals each.

Halley Shaffer  (Sr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) was back in veteran form with another multi-goal performance while Zoie Echols (So., Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) assisted on all three goals to lead the Phoenix offensively.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 3, Penn State Altoona 3

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 0-0-1, Penn State Altoona 0-0-1

How It Happened
  • It didn't take long for the Phoenix to heat up as Echols found Shaffer for the first time just 8:12 into the contest. In a nearly carbon copy situation, the dynamic duo put it on repeat for a second goal just 67 seconds later.
  • Penn State Altoona eventually broke through the Phoenix back line as Kylei Martin assisted a Jordan Yaletsko score, but the Phoenix were able to answer right back as Reilly Ryan (So., Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) found the back of the net on another dish from Echols to push the lead back to two.
  • The score remained dormant until the 78th minute when Altoona pulled within one as Alexa Adiarte scored on an assist from Kira Trexler. Three minutes later, the Nittany Lions benefitted from a foul just inside the 18-yard box which awarded them a penalty kick. Goalkeeper Bella Scarlato (FY, Severn, Md. / Glen Burnie) guessed correctly on the attempt, but Taylor Frederick had enough force on the take to get it deflected in for the equalizer.
Inside The Numbers
  • Shaffer added to her program-record goals and points marks with her 17th multi-goal game. She now has 54 goals and 116 points in her career.
  • Echols had her finest game offensively with a hat trick of assists. They were the first assists of the sophomore's career.
  • Ryan's goal was the first offensive points of her college career.
  • Shots favored the Phoenix by a 19-13 count overall and 14-8 mark in shots on goal.
