Phoenix Rise Again: Baseball Strikes Back Against Gators

(HANOVER, Md.) – Wilson avenged a defeat at the hands of Notre Dame last week by returning the favor with a road victory on Tuesday afternoon. Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) was a triple short of the cycle in leading the charge while Brady Bakner (5th, Waynesboro, Pa. / Scotland Campus) scored thrice in the victory.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 14, Notre Dame 8

Venue: Joe Cannon Stadium

Records: Wilson 7-23, 5-9 UE; Notre Dame 6-23, 2-12 UE

How It Happened
  • The scoreboard started its workout in the second inning as Wilson opened up with a pair of runs before Notre Dame answered with three of its own. A wild pitch allowed Tony Scott (FY, Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) to score and Tyler O'Brien (FY, Frederick, Md. / Tuscarora) doubled in Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) for the Phoenix, while four hits led to the Gators gaining the lead in the bottom of the frame.
  • The lead didn't last long for the Gators as the Wilson bats were just getting warmed up. This time Torres did the damage as his base hit to center scored Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside). Smith hit in Bakner for a 5-3 lead one inning later, but the Gators were able to get that run back unearned in the bottom half.
  • O'Brien singled in Torres and Bakner doubled to right center to score Seth Bivens (Jr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown C.C.) for a 7-4 lead in the fifth. However, the Gators again answered by way of a RBI double in the bottom.
  • The Phoenix started to pull away in the seventh. An error allowed Bivens to score to make it 8-5 before Middlebrooks left the ballpark with a three-run blast later in the frame. After Notre Dame scored a pair in the eighth, Middlebrooks doubled down the left field line to score Bakner and Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown CC). The Gators added one in the bottom of the ninth to set up the final score.
Inside The Numbers
  • Middlebrooks finished the day 3-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored and a season-best five RBIs. His homer was his fourth of the year and second in as many days.
  • O'Brien and Bakner also had three-hit games for the Blue and White. Bakner was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored while O'Brien was 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
  • Torres went 2-for-4 with two walks, two RBIs, and two runs scored.
  • Dallas Gilbert (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Penn State Harrisburg) started the game and struck out five in 4.0 innings. Chase Supensky (Jr., Baltimore, Md. / Towson) spelled him in the fifth and went the rest of the way with an additional four strikeouts to record the win and improve to 2-2 on the year.
