Men's Volleyball Pounds Pratt

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson men's volleyball team increased its win streak to three as it handled Pratt Institute in three sets on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix hit over .300 for the third time this season while limiting the Cannoneers to a negative average.

With the victory, the Blue and White guaranteed itself a winning record in conference play for the first time in program history. With two matches left in the regular season, the Phoenix are looking to secure at least one more home match with a postseason contest in the Gannett Field House.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 3, Pratt 0

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 11-12, 5-1 UE; Pratt 6-11, 0-5 UE;

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix started to pull away in the first set after a 4-0 run made it a 10-5 game thanks to a pair of kills from Xavier Webber (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East). The Cannoneers stayed within five in the short term, but Wilson was able to leave them behind as a 6-0 run on the strength of two Jacob McCoy (Jr., York, Pa. / Spring Grove) kills made it 23-12. Demetrius Simmons (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) pounded down the kill for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Cannoneers held a slight 7-6 edge early in the second before the Phoenix reeled off the next three points and six of the next seven. After Pratt's Brooks Reid scored the next point, Wilson again put the set out of reach, this time with a 6-0 run. Ryan Koontz (So., York Haven, Pa. / Red Land) started the run with a kill while Jackson Wolfe (FY, Abbottstown, Pa. / New Oxford) and Simmons added to it. Simmons and McCoy scored a pair of kills to give Wilson a 24-11 lead en route to a 25-13 win.
  • Pratt had its best start in the third as it tried to elongate the match. The visitors were up 14-12 before Wilson scored seven of the next eight. The Phoenix prevented the Canoneers from scoring consecutive points the rest of the way to complete the sweep.
Inside The Numbers
  • The Phoenix had a balanced attack with McCoy leading the way on nine kills. He did so on 14 attempts while hitting .429.
  • Simmons had one of his best days on the attacking end as he tallied seven kills on 12 attempts with just one error for a success rate of .500.
  • Camden Sterner (So., Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) led the team on the receiving end with eight digs.
  • Simmons was a beast once again up front defensively with seven blocks.
Up Next
The Phoenix are on the road for their final two matches of the season. First up is a trip to Bryn Athyn on Wednesday. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
