Daphney Hits Pair of Homers as Wilson Falls at LBC

(LANCASTER, Pa.) – Wilson returned to the baseball diamond to take on Lancaster Bible in a non-conference showdown on Wednesday afternoon. The two squads combined 35 runs and 38 hits, but unfortunately it was the Chargers on the positive end of the scoreboard as they downed the Phoenix in a high-scoring affair.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 16, Lancaster Bible 19

Venue: LBC Baseball Field

Records: Wilson 1-11, Lancaster Bible 9-9

How It Happened
  • Tyler Smith (So., Crofton, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) and Jordan Daphney (Sr., Countryside, Fla. / Countryside) got the scoreboard warmed up early as they hit back-to-back home runs for a quick 3-0 lead. It didn't take long for LBC to get going as well as the hosts took the lead after plating one in the first and adding three more in the second.
  • Daphney helped keep the bats hot with a base hit to right to score Harry Middlebrooks (So., Bel Air, Md. / Archbishop Curley) to tie the game at 4-all in the top of the third. After a Samuel Martin (So., Maugansville, Md. / North Hagerstown / Hagerstown C.C.) base hit, Seth Bivens (Jr., Hancock, Md. / Hancock / Hagerstown) homered to put the Blue and White back in front. LBC was able to answer with the long ball in the bottom of the frame as a pair of two run round trips and a solo shot made it a 9-7 game.
  • Ryan Turner (Jr., Brick, N.J. / Brick Memorial / Penn State Harrisburg) got into the mix with a leadoff homer in the fourth while Smith and Daphney remained on fire to give the Phoenix the lead back. A Smith single scored Ryan Torres (Sr., Baltimore, Md. / Archbishop Curley) before Daphney made it 11-9 with his second dinger of the day. After a Charger homer in the bottom end made it 11-10, Wilson added five more in the fifth. Middlebrooks highlighted the frame with a three-run blast to cap the rally.
  • The Chargers lit the fuse on their comeback attempt with a run in the fifth before they scored three runs on four hits in their next at-bat. They completed the comeback attempt with five runs on four hits in the eighth.
