Phoenix Downed By Blue Jays

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Jacob McCoy (Jr., York, Pa. / Spring Grove) was a kill short of double-figures and hit over .500 on the day, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to visiting Elizabethtown on Thursday evening. The Phoenix got better as the night went on and were close to extending the match to at least a fourth set before the Blue Jays were able to pull out the third for a sweep.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 0, Elizabethtown 3 (25-17, 25-18, 28-26)

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 3-7, Elizabethtown 9-4

How It Happened
  • Action went back-and-forth in the early stages of the match with both teams even through the first 26 points. Demetrius Simmons (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) had the Phoenix up 13-12 after a kill before the Blue Jays went on a 6-0 run to create the first separation between the teams. They got stronger from there and closed the frame on a 6-2 run to win by eight.
  • Wilson held on to a small lead to start the second. A kill by Jackson Wolfe (FY, Abbottstown, Pa. / New Oxford) and a block by Simmons helped give the Phoenix a 9-7 lead. Another pair of kills from Wolfe helped make it 12-9. Elizabethtown stayed within reach and eventually pulled ahead in the later stages as an 8-0 run had them serve for the potential game point. The Phoenix stayed alive for one more point, but a Patrick Craig kill gave the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.
  • Another close battle took place in the third with neither team able to create much in the way of separation. The first three-point lead took place when Etown scored three consecutive with three kills, but Wilson answered with a Xavier Webber (Jr., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East) and McCoy block, a Blue Jays error, and a McCoy kill to pull even at 17- all. After Etown scored the next point, the Phoenix took a four-point lead after three consecutive Etown errors and a Vincent Natale (Jr., Mt. Airy, Md. / Linganore) ace. The Blue Jays rallied to take a 23-22 lead, but Wilson responded with a Ryan Koontz (So., York, Pa. / Red Land) kill and an Etown miscue go go up 24-23. Wilson had a couple of opportunities to score game, however the Blue Jays staved off a fourth set each time and eventually scored four of five to win 28-26.
Inside The Numbers
  • McCoy led the attack with nine kills on 16 attempts for a hitting percentage of .563. Wolfe was right behind him with eight kills while hitting .389.
  • Defensively Koontz, Webber, and Camden Sterner (So., Spring Grove, Pa. / Spring Grove) led the team on the receiving side with seven digs.
  • Webber was strong up front defensively as well with four blocks on the nights.
  • The Blue Jays were led by Arun Gopinath.
