(FARMVILLE, Va.) – Wilson took on a nationally ranked program for the second consecutive day as it was matched up against No. 13 Roanoke in Hampden-Sydney's Holiday Classic. The Maroons showed why they were worthy of such a ranking while handing the Phoenix the defeat.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 69, Roanoke 104
Venue: S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium
Records: Wilson 3-10, 0-2 United East; Roanoke 6-3, 1-1 ODAC
How It Happened
- The cliché that basketball is a game of runs held true in the first half. Roanoke opened up the game with an 8-0 lead before Wilson answered with a 7-0 run. Winston Raford (Jr., Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) started the push with a layup and was followed by Tobias Reese (So., Mansfield, Texas / St. Elizabeth (Del.)) making three free throws after he was fouled on a 3-point attempt. Armani Jones (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Christ The King Prep / Bryant and Stratton) added a layup following a rebound and assist from Jalen Bowie (Sr., Frederick, Md. / Frederick / Shippensburg). However, the momentum switched back in favor of the Maroons who scored the next 25 points over a six-minute stretch to take control of the game. Roanoke was able to build its lead from there and maintained a comfortable advantage the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Reese led the Phoenix with 13 points as he went 3-for-5 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers.
- Jones, Davis, and Richard Chase (FY, Harrisburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin) all scored a dozen to round out the double-figure scorers for the Blue and White. Davis paced the phoenix defensively with eight rebounds and two steals. Davis's 12 were a season high.
- Roanoke's Jackson Bell led a quintet of Maroons in double-figures with 17 points after he went 8-for-14 from the field.
