How It Happened
- The first half was about as close as it could be as neither team held more than a two-possession lead at any point in the frame. The largest lead came at the 13:05 mark after Jalen Pierce (Sr., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate / Millersville) spotted up for a jumper to make it 11-6. It capped a small 7-0 run that also included a 3-pointer by Jones and a Jaylin Davis (Sr., Hampton, Va. / Kecoughtan / Lynchburg) layup. The Mustangs immediately answered with a 9-0 run to regain the lead and the two teams proceeded to exchange advantages a few more times before the end of the half with the Blue and White going into the halftime break on top by way of a four-point play after Jalen Bowie (Sr., Frederick, Md. / Frederick / Shippensburg) was fouled on a 3-pointer in the waning seconds.
- The Mustangs took charge at the start of the second be going back in front and taking a six-point lead after a layup made it 43-37 less than two minutes in. A Jones triple and a Davis layup from a Jones dish put Wilson back within one shortly after. It sparked a 14-5 run which put the Phoenix in front 51-48 by way of a Tobias Reese (So., Mansfield, Texas / St. Elizabeth (Del.)) fast break layup with 12:05 to go. Unfortunately for Wilson, it was the largest lead it would have the rest of the way. With 5:16 left in the game and the Phoenix up two, the Mustangs went on an 11-1 run to take the lead and pull away for the win.
Inside The Numbers
- Jones finished with 21 points and eight rebounds to lead the Phoenix in both categories. The 21 points were co-game high honors along with Stevenson's Myles Jackson. Pierce also pulled down eight rebounds for the Phoenix.
- Bowie put together a solid game with 16 points and seven rebounds. He was 6-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 behind the arc. Defensively he added two steals.
- Pierce also scored in double figures with a dozen points. He once again was above .500 in the field as he went 5-for-8 overall and 2-for-4 from range.
- Reese added 14 points on a 5-for-9 night with three steals.
