Women's Hoops Puts Scare In Shenandoah

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball game gave a scare to Shenandoah as the two battled it out on the hardwood Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix went point for point in the opening half, but a second half sting by the Hornets guided the visitors to victory.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 57, Shenandoah 75

Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House

Records: Wilson 2-2, 0-0 United East; Shenandoah 2-0, 0-0 ODAC

How It Happened
  • Both teams were hot out of the gate with a fast pace tempo that saw five consecutive baskets made after the Hornets missed a game-opening layup attempt. Leah Laubach (So., Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) got the Blue and White started with 3-pointer and was followed by a triple from Kailee Soto (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Columbia) following a pair of Shenandoah buckets. The outside shot was a first quarter trend for the Phoenix who added treys from Lae Black (Sr., Laurel, Md. / Meade) that made the score 11-10 and another from Laubach that made the score 23-20 and ended an 8-0 run by Shenandoah.
  • Black continued the process with a 3-pointer to open up the second quarter and made the score 25-23 only to be answered by one from the Hornets. Soto added another with just under four minutes left to tie the game at 33-all and drained another two minutes later to send both teams to halftime locked at 40.
  • Layups by Chelcie Forrester (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg / WVU Potomac State) and Soto kept Wilson even at the start of the second half. However, Shenandoah started to pull away from there. Following Soto's bunny, the Hornets launched a 17-4 run to close out the quarter. Laubach brought the deficit back to 10 after a 3-pointer opened up the fourth, but it was the closest the Phoenix could get as Shenandoah answered with the next six points.
Inside The Numbers
  • Laubach had a fantastic game and scored 18 points for co-game high honors with Shenandoah's Addisyn Banks. Laubach shot 6-for-12 overall and 3-for-5 from range for her total.
  • Laubach also added 10 rebounds for her third double-double to start the season. She wasn't the only one as Forrester equaled her with 10 caroms to go with 10 points. Both of them had six offensive rebounds. For Forrester, she's reached double-figures in rebounds every game.
  • Soto finished with 11 points with three 3-pointers.
  • Jewels Torres (Sr., York, Pa. / West York) had a solid overall game with eight points, five assists, and four steals.
  • Wilson edged out Shenandoah on the glass by a slim 42-38 margin.
  • Wilson's eight three pointers are the most its made this season and one off from the season high from 2024-25.
