Turner's Brace Powers Wilson To Win At Schuylkill

(SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa.) – Gretchen Turner (Sr., York, Pa. / Northeastern) led a balanced attack while Bella Scarlato (FY, Severn, Md. / Glen Burnie) pitched a shutout as Wilson defeated Penn State Schuylkill for its third consecutive win on Thursday afternoon. Turner scored just six minutes in, and while that was all the Phoenix needed, they added two more in the second half.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 3, Penn State Schuylkill 0

Field Surface: Grass

Records: Wilson 5-6-2, 2-2 UE; Penn State Schuylkill 6-5-0, 4-0-0 PSUAC

How It Happened
  • The Phoenix wasted little time little time getting the offense revved up evidenced by Annie Smith (Jr., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) taking a shot just three minutes into the contest. It went high, but the Blue and White made their next chance count three minutes later when Turner scored on a centering pass from Atiya Jackson (Jr., Brunswick, Md. / Brunswick / Shippensburg) at the 6:02 mark.
  • Wilson was close to breaking the game open at various points in the first half, but offsides calls plagued them with three coming in the six minutes following the goal. The Phoenix were also able to force five corner kicks in the half, but were unable to convert and went to the break with a 1-0 lead.
  • That changed in the second half as the Phoenix kept firing at the Nittany Lions' back line. Maddy Miller (Sr., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) and Halley Shaffer (Sr., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) both had chances in the 47th and 49th minutes. Corner kicks followed in the 52nd and 54th and Wilson was able to convert on the latter as Miller found Turner in a crowded group crashing the net.
  • The final goal came midway through the second half. Midfield play helped set up the score with a long pass up the left side of the field. Erilyn Schleigh (FY, Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) flicked it up with a header to Madison Sokolowski (So., Felton, Pa. / Red Lion) who put the finishing touches inside the far post.
Inside The Numbers
  • Turner's brace was her first multiple goal game of her career. She now has three goals on the season. She's also recorded points in back-to-back games for the first time of her career as well.
  • Sokolowski's goal was the first of the season and first since scoring a pair against Keystone last season.
  • Jackson's helper was her second of the season. She now has six points on two goals and two assists this year.
  • Miller's assist was her first point of the season and 40th of her career.
  • Scarlato went the distance and made six saves on 10 shots faced. It was her second clean sheet of the season and Wilson's third as a team.
