Late Push Helps Wilson Bounce Brandywine In Women's Hoops

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Wilson women's basketball team pulled away from Penn State Brandywine in the fourth quarter to score back-to-back wins on Tuesday evening. With the game tied at 46, the Phoenix closed out the game on a 16-3 run over the last 4:36 to down the Nittany Lions.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 62, Penn State Brandywine 49

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 5-11, 4-3 UE; Penn State Brandywine 1-14, 0-7 UE

How It Happened
  • It was a tight contest for the bulk of the game that didn't see either team lead by double-digits until the fourth quarter. That occurred initially as Wilson closed the third quarter out on a 12-3 run for its largest lead of the game to that point. Jewels Torres (Jr., York, Pa. / West York) started the push with a pair of free throws to tie the game at 31-all while Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (So., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) closed out the frame with a layup and a 41-34 lead.
  • Things appeared well for the Phoenix as they opened the fourth with a Laela Robinson (Sr., Lancaster, Pa. / Conestoga Valley) 3-pointer and a Leah Laubach (FY, Marietta, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic) layup put the hosts up a dozen. The Nittany Lions responded with a 12-0 run to tie the game with 4:36 left in regulation, but the Phoenix remained composed and answered Brandywines' push with one of their own. Chelcie Forrester (Jr., Shippensburg, Pa. / WVU Potomac State) got the Phoenix charged up again with a jumper on an assist from Laubach before a steal and layup by Chloe Irving (FY, Martinsburg, W.Va. / Martinsburg) provided more momentum. A Brandywine layup tamed Wilson albeit shortly, before a pair of Irving free throws got the Phoenix back on track. Torres went on a personal tear as she scored eight of the next 10 points to secure the win.
Inside the Numbers
  • Black led the team with 14 points, the fourth time this season she's reached double-figures. She did so by shooting .500 from the field where she went 5-for-10.
  • Torres scored a dozen on the day, most of which came from the free throw line where she was a perfect 10-for-10. The bulk of her points came in the fourth quarter where she scored eight to help Wilson pull away. She added three assists and three steals.
  • Laubach finished with 11 points for the second time in as many games. She went 5-for-9 from the field and led the team with four assists.
  • Wilson controlled the boards by a 50-35 margin over Brandywine.
Up Next
Wilson will look to keep the momentum rolling against Cairn in a road contest this Saturday. Tip-off with the Highlanders is set for 1 p.m. in Langhorne.
