Phoenix Firepower Too Much For Gophers

(BALTIMORE, Md.) – When you have one player score a hat trick, another player score twice, and a third player add a goal of her own with three assists, the end result is almost always positive. That was the case Monday night as Wilson defeated Goucher 7-3 in its final game before conference action starts up this weekend.

Paige Ney (Jr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) was responsible for the hatty, while Haley Hamrick (FY, Taneytown, Md. / Union Bridge) didn't just score her first collegiate goal, but her second too. Kate Seymour (So., Churchton, Md. / Southern) filled up the stat sheet as well with a goal of her own in addition to three assists.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 7, Goucher 3

Venue: Beldon Field

Records: Wilson 7-1, 0-0 UE; Goucher 6-4, 1-1 Landmark

How It Happened
  • While the Wilson attack shined, it was the defense that set a tone early and averted a swarming Gopher front line that fired off four shots to start the game. Erin Sullivan (FY, Byram, N.J. / Lenape Valley) made the save on the first, while the second hit the post and went out. The next two were blocked by the Phoenix defenders.
  • Momentum switched when the Blue and White flipped the field and made true on a penalty corner. It was actually the third corner in succession, but the third time was a charm in the Charm City as Hailey Steele (Sr., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) scored on an assist from Lizzie Landon (Jr., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove). Although the Gophers answered with a goal on a penalty corner of their own near the start of the second, Wilson quickly regained the lead as Seymour found Hamrick just three minutes later. Wilson kept up the pressure as Seymour and Ney added goals over the following six minutes before Goucher added a second just before the half.
  • The Gophers kept momentum and attempted to tried to cut into the deficit some more, but the Phoenix were able to stave away multiple shots once again to start the half. Sullivan came up huge as she rejected three shots while another went wide.
  • On the opposite end Ney remained hot and hit paydirt a second time with 5:32 to go in the frame. Just over a minute later, Seymour assisted Ney to secure the hat trick and made the score 6-2 heading to the fourth.
  • This time the Phoenix inundated the Goucher defense with four shots to start the period, but three were saved while another hit the post. The Gophers were able to counter and scored with 10 minutes to go, but it was as close as they could get as Hamrick put on the finishing touches with her second goal on another Seymour helper.
Inside The Numbers
  • Despite the final score, shots were fairly even with Goucher leading the category 21-19. Wilson tended to be more accurate and was on the better end of a 15-10 difference in shots on goal.
  • Sullivane had one of the best games of her year as she made a season-best seven saves on those 21 shots faced.
  • Ney's hat trick gives her nine goals on the season. It's her third multiple goal game of the year.
  • Seymour is on hot streak with goals in the past three games. On top of that it was the first multiple assist game of her career. She now has 14 points on the year.
  • Steele's goal was her first of the season and the second of her career. Her last goal came in a road win at Bryn Athyn during the 2022 season.
  • Ney's hat trick was Wilson's first since October 15, 2022, when Alexis Pflumm accomplished the fete in a win over Sweet Briar.
