Phoenix Succumbs To St. Mary's In Championship Game

(ST. MARY'S CITY, Md.) – The season came to a close for women's lacrosse as No. 3 Wilson fell to top seed St. Mary's in the United East Championship final on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix faired better than they did in the regular season against the Seahawks, but the hosts continued their dominant play against league opponents with an early lead that proved insurmountable.

The Basics

Score: No. 3 Wilson 4, No. 1 St. Mary's 20

Venue: JLR Stadium

Records: Wilson 9-5, St. Mary's 11-6

How It Happened
  • St. Mary's opened the scoring with three goals in the opening five minutes. It progressed from there as the hosts took a 10-0 lead into the second quarter. By halftime the Seahawks led 14-0.
  • Three more goals followed before the Phoenix eventually broke through midway through the third period. Alyvia Henneman (FY, Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley) did the honors with a setup from Sage Lague (Jr., Fairplay, Md. / Goretti). Lague went on to score the next goal as Wilson took advantage on special teams.
  • Anna Gibson (Sr., Cecil County, Md. / Perryville) got on the scoreboard as the Blue and White opened the fourth quarter with an offensive burst. After another pair of St. Mary's scores, Lague scored the final goal of the game with 1:18 left in regulation.
