Softball Sweeps Highlanders

(LANGHORNE, Pa.) – Rylee Piper (FY, Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) and Paige Dill (So., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) were dominant as they helped Wilson sweep a twin bill with Cairn on Saturday afternoon. Piper fanned nine Highlanders to open the day while Dill tossed a two-hit mercy rule shutout by the Phoenix in Game 2.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 6, Cairn 2
Game 2 – Wilson 8, Cairn 0 (5 Innings)

Venue: Stillman Complex

How It Happened (Game 1)
  • It was a scoreless game until the third when the Blue and White broke the game open with a four-spot. Lindsey Dalenberg (FY, Niles, Mich. / Edwardsburg) opened the rally with a base hit down the third base line, eventually landing on third after a steal of second and another base hit. Alyssa Wenger (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) drove her in before Madison Heuer (Jr., Greencastle, Pa. / Boonsboro) made it 2-0 after she scored after Haiden Brookens (Sr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced. Wenger scored on a wild pitch and Payton Kendall (Jr., McConnellsburg, Pa. / Forbes Road) closed the scoring on a sacrifice fly by Taylor Barker (Sr., Chehalis, Wash. / WF West).
  • Wilson continued to add runs with one in the fourth and the fifth. In the fourth Heuer made it 5-0 when she initially reached on a walk, stole second, and scored on a single to left center by Wenger. The fifth saw Barker score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Haley Privett (Sr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet).
  • The lead carried into the seventh when the Highlanders attempted a late rally with four hits that scored a pair, but no further damage was done as they left two stranded as Wilson took Game 1.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • Wilson's offense was hot to open the game and scored just two batters in. After Wenger led off with a walk, she ended up scoring after an infield error following a base it by Dalenberg. Waverly Moffett (FY, Westminster, Md. / Winter Mill) then doubled to left to score Dalenberg. Three batters later Abigail Evans (FY, Muncy, Pa. / Warrior Run) singled to center to score Moffett.
  • The score remained 3-0 until the fourth when Heuer led off the frame with a home run. Wilson put the finishing touches on the scoring with four more runs in the fifth. Addyson Stewart (So., Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) singled up the middle to score Jenna Dwyer (FY, Bel Air, Md. / C. Milton Wright) and later scored herself on a double by Heuer. Heuer and Stewart then came home on a triple by Wenger.
Inside The Numbers
  • Piper went the distance in the opener to improve to 6-2 on the season. She was dealing throughout as she struck out nine with at least one strike out every inning. It's the most punchouts in a single game for the Phoenix since Megan Potter fanned nine in Wilson's NCAA tournament win against Hunter on May 14, 2022.
  • Dill was also impressive as she improved to 5-3 on the two-hit shutout. She struck out two on the afternoon.
  • Wenger had an incredible day from the plate as she went 4-for-7, including a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples and a walk in Game 2. She hit two RBI and scored one run in both games.
  • Heuer had a three-hit day with multiple hits in Game 2. Both went for extra bases with the home run and the double.
