(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Taylor Barker (Sr., Chehalis, Wash. / WF West) homered twice with one round trip in each game to help Wilson defeat Albright in a twin bill on Sunday afternoon. It was the home opener for the Phoenix who were playing in their first games since spring break 19 days ago.
The Basics
Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 4, Albright 1
Game 2 – Wilson 8, Albright 5
Venue: Wilson Softball Field
Records: Wilson 6-4, Albright 3-13
How It Happened (Game 1)
- Barker didn't waste any time making her presence known as she helped Wilson light up the scoreboard in the first inning. After Alyssa Wenger (Sr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second, Barker doubled to left field to bring her in.
- Lindsey Dalenberg (FY, Niles, Mich. / Edwardsburg) added to the lead one inning later as her base hit brought in Haley Privett (Sr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) and Kiera O'Brine (FY, Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern). Privett initially reached on a fielder's choice while O'Brine walked.
- Barker's first dinger of the day came in the bottom of the third as she led off and made the score 4-0. Albright used a pair of hits and an error to score in the top of the fifth, but left two runners on base. The Lions threatened again in the sixth as they filled the bases, but Wilson was able to get out of the jam unscathed.
How It Happened (Game 2)
- The nightcap was a bit more of a high scoring affair and both teams plated runs in the opening frame. Three hits led to the Lions scoring first with a pair of runs to start the game, but Barker tied the game with her second home run in the bottom of the inning. Dalenberg scored on the play after leading off with a base hit.
- Wilson took the lead in the bottom of the second. Wenger opened up the frame with a base hit up the middle, moved to second on a sacrifice, and scored on a line drive up the middle by Waverly Moffett (FY, Westminster, Md. / Winter Mill).
- Albright came back to take the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third, but the Phoenix quickly tied it in the bottom half of the inning as Privett sent one back up the middle to score Barker who led off with a single to center. The Blue and White jumped back ahead in the fourth. Dalenberg led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on an error. She scored one batter later on ground out.
- Wilson carried that lead into its final at bat where it added some insurance. Addyson Stewart (So., Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) led off with a double and Haiden Brookens (Sr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet) moved her to third on a single before both ended up scoring on the same wild pitch shortly after for a 7-4 lead. Moffett added another run on a single up the middle to score Wenger. Albright ended up scoring one in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get any closer and left one runner stranded to end the game.
Inside The Numbers
- Rylee Piper (FY, Newville, Pa. / Big Spring) got the win in Game 1 as she stifled the Lions bats and allowed just one unearned run in the win. She struck out a pair as she improved to 2-2.
- Paige Dill (So., New Oxford, Pa. / New Oxford) recorded the win in Game 2 as she entered in relief and tossed the final 4.2 innings. She allowed one run on five hits and a walk with a strikeout during that time to improve to 3-1.
- Dalenberg had a busy day with four hits, three of which were in Game 2 alone. She hit in two runs in the opener before scoring twice herself in the second.
- Barker finished 4-for-6 on the day with four RBI and three runs scored. Her two homers were her first two of the season. She is now 13-for-17 with six extra base hits in her last five games.
