(SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.) – Trea Keys (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake / Howard C.C.), Armani Jones (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Christ The King / Bryant and Stratton), and
Gary Robertson (Gr., Washington, D.C. / Potomac / Brant and Stratton) all scored in double-figures, but it wasn't enough as Wilson fell to Division II Shippensburg on Sunday. It was a competitive contest throughout as the Phoenix stayed within single digits for most of the game before the Raiders pulled away in the second half.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 72, Shippensburg 85
Venue: Heiges Field House
Records: Wilson 4-8, 2-1 UE; Shippensburg 4-7, 2-3 PSAC
How It Happened
- Wilson had a hot start as a Jones layup and a triple by Jalen Pierce (FY, Mansfield, Texas / St. Elizabeth (Del.)) gave the Phoenix an early 5-2 lead, but the Raiders were able to respond with a 10-0 run. The Blue and White didn't let the game get away from them and stayed with Shippensburg, staying within single digits the rest of the half. Wilson was able to get within a single possession on multiple occasions, the last of which came after a pair of Keys free throws made it 35-32 with 1:39 in the first before Shippensburg added the last four for a seven-point lead at the break.
- The second half started with a Raiders 3-pointer to go up 10. The two teams equally exchanged the next eight baskets before an old-fashioned three-point play by Robertson made it 51-45 after the and-one free throw with 16:21 left. Approximately 90 seconds later Winston Raford (So., Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park.) hit a corner three on a dish from Pierce to make it 54-50. That was the closest Wilson would get the rest of the way as Shippensburg slowly pulled away the rest of the way.
Inside The Numbers
- Keys led the Phoenix with 19 points as he shot .500 (7-of-14) from the field. He hit three 3-pointers and added three assists to his line as well.
- Jones was once again strong with 17 points and eight rebounds. He tallied two steals and a block defensively.
- Robertson chalked up a dozen while being the set-up man with five assists. He made two steals defensively.
- This was the cleanest games in terms of ball handling Wilson has had this season. The Phoenix committed a season-low seven turnovers which led to only six Shippensburg points. On the opposite end, 11 Raiders miscues resulted in 19 points for the Phoenix.
- Wilson made at least nine 3-pointers for the third consecutive game this season.
Up Next
