(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Not one, but two overtimes were needed as Wilson and Mount Aloysius met in a midweek showdown on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Phoenix, they were on the bottom end of the scoreboard as the Mounties were able to pull away in the second extra frame.
Five Phoenix scored in double figures, but MAC was able to counter with a trio of players who recorded double-doubles in their win.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 90, Mount Aloysius 98 (2OT)
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 1-4, 0-0 UE; Mount Aloysius 2-2, 0-0 AMCC
How It Happened
- Wilson had the hot hands to start as the Phoenix burned the nets with 3-pointers on four out of six trips down the floor in the opening six minutes of the game. A pair of them came from Winston Raford (So., Woodbridge, Va. / Forest Park) with additional treys from Antonio Perez Jr. (So., Frederick, Md. / Saint John's Catholic) and Gary Robertson (Gr., Washington, D.C. / Potomac) putting the Phoenix up 19-10 and forcing the Mounties to call a timeout. After Mount Aloysius cut the deficit to two, Tobias Reese (FY, Mansfield, Texas / St. Elizabeth [Del.]) also delivered from downtown twice for a 28-19 lead. Steals by Reese and Jalen Pierce (Jr., Richmond, Va. / Collegiate) followed and led to layups by Jordan McKenzie (Sr., White Plains, Md. / North Point) and Pierce, respectively to cap an 11-0 run and force another Mounties timeout.
- Mount Aloysius was able to trim the deficit to five by the halftime break thanks to hot shooting by the visitors that saw them make 62.9% in the opening frame. They eventually caught up with the Phoenix and took the lead on a BJ Busbee 3-poitner 5:29 into the second half. For the final 14:31 of regulation, no one held a lead of more than two possessions. Mount Aloysius went up on a fastbreak layup by Will Hagwood with 1:07 to go, but Robertson pulled the Phoenix even with 44 seconds left to force overtime.
- In the first overtime, Robertson again played the hero as he scored six of Wilson's eight points to add a second overtime. A steal and layup with 1:29 to go put the Phoenix within one, and after a MAC layup on its return trip, Robertson slashed through the lane for an old-fashioned 3-point play to tie the game.
- Luck ran out for the Phoenix as the Mounties opened up the second overtime on a 9-0 run. Wilson was unable to recover despite 3-pointers by Raford and Reese.
Inside The Numbers
- A quintet of Phoenix scored in double-figures with Robertson leading the way with 19 points. He was busy on the defensive end as he pulled down seven rebounds off missed MAC shots and tallied six steals for a new career-high.
- McKenzie and Raford both finished with 14 points. McKenzie was 7-of-14 overall on the day and added four rebounds and three steals. Raford drilled four 3-pointers.
- Trea Keys (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake / Howard C.C.) and Reese both had a baker's dozen. Keys was 6-for-14 overall and led the team with five assists. Reese was 4-for-7 overall and even more lethal from range where he was 4-for-5.
- The Mounties had a strong counterpunch to the Phoenix firepower in De'Von Haggans who led all players with 36 points. He was strong inside where he went 12-for-20 overall and 12-for-14 at the charity stripe. He added 11 rebounds and two blocks as well.
- Joining him with double-doubles were Hagwood and Busbee. Hagwood finished with 23 and 14. Busbee added 16 and 11.
- While Mount Aloysius controlled the boards by a 59-37 margin, Wilson used a tight defense that forced the Mounties into 23 turnovers, 19 of which were steals by the Phoenix.
