Phoenix Can't Overcome Hot Hornets Shooting

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Gary Robertson (Gr., Washington, D.C. / Potomac / Bryant and Stratton) led all scorers with 19 points, but a hot-shooting Shenandoah squad spoiled Wilson's home opener as the two gathered on Wednesday evening. The Hornets shot an impressive 63.8% in the non-conference contest and used a rugged defense to disrupt the Phoenix on the offensive end.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 69, Shenandoah 89

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 1-2, 0-0 UE; Shenandoah 1-2, 0-0 ODAC

How It Happened
  • The start of the game saw both teams burn the nets as each team sank the first five shots combined which resulted in a 7-5 Hornets lead with an Armani Jones (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / Christ The King / Bryant and Stratton) triple and a Trea Keys (Sr., Columbia, Md. / Wilde Lake / Howard C.C.) layup. From there Shenandoah started to pull away with a 21-5 run. The Blue and White cut the deficit down to a dozen on a couple of occasions before heading into the halftime break down 39-24.
  • Wilson faired better in the second half and shot 44.4%, but unfortunately so did the Hornets who hit 70% of theirs. The Phoenix kept within striking distance until midway through the frame when the visitors pushed their advantage to over 20.
Inside The Numbers
  • Robertson finished with 19 points and was 7-of-17 from the field. He was busy on the glass as well with six rebounds to tie with Jones and Jordan McKenzie (Sr., White Plains, Md. / North Point / Southern Maryland) for team-high honors.
  • Jones and McKenzie joined Robertson in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Jones excelled defensively with four steals and a block, while McKenzie was 4-for-8 overall from the field.
  • Shenandoah was led by Joseph Baldwin who led a Hornets quintet of double-figure scorers with 18 markers. He was 9-of-11 on the day with six rebounds.
  • The Hornets controlled the glass overall by a 38-28 margin.
