(WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.) – While it was technically a non-conference contest, the Wilson women's soccer team got its first taste of United East action as it traveled to Penn on a muggy Wednesday evening. The Phoenix and Wildcats were well matched for each other as the game ended in a scoreless draw.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 0, Penn 0
Venue: UPMC Field
Records: Wilson 0-2-1, Penn 0-0-3
- With both teams looking for their first win of the season, both teams had strong chances early. Penn's Sara Darlington had the first take 10 minutes into the game, but the Phoenix were able to counter with Bianca Sommers (So., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) taking three shots over the next eight minutes. One was saved by Wildcats' netminder Nicole Lichtinger while the two shots that sandwiched it were both high.
- Wilson provided another flurry of shots between the 25th and 33rd minutes. Sommers added her fourth of the game while Annie Smith (Fy., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown), Gretchen Turner (So., York, Pa. / Northeastern) and Maddy Miller (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) all had cracks at it with only Miller's chance being on target.
- The Wildcats responded with offensive pressure to start the second half. Darlington had a chance on goal just 105 seconds in, but Erin Roszkowiak (Jr., Cinnamonson, N.J. / Cinnamonson) made the save. Roszkowiak kept the game scoreless with another save in the 56th minute while two other Penn shots before that went high and wide.
- On the opposite end, Wilson's chances were few and far between, but the Blue and White did have close calls in the final 10. Sommers led the charge with a shot that went wide in the 80th minute. Julia Elliott (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck) had a shot saved just over a minute later. Smith and Skylar Molnar (Jr., Shohola, Pa. / Delaware Valley) both added shots, but both went wide in the final moments.
