(ALTOONA, Pa.) – A balanced Penn State-Altoona attack was too much for Wilson to overcome as it fell on the road in three sets Tuesday evening.
The Basics
Scores: Wilson 0, Penn State-Altoon 3 (25-13, 25-10, 25-16)
Venue: Adler Arena
Records: Wilson 0-2, Penn State-Altoona 1-4
How It Happened
- The Nittany Lions jumped out of the gate and took a big lead to start the contest. The Phoenix attempted to chip away at the deficit with a 6-0 run aided by a couple of Allyson Garcelon (So., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) kills, but it was the closest the Blue and White could get as they fell behind one set.
- Another fast start saw the hosts jump out to an 8-1 lead in the second. Deah Menedis (Jr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) sparked a short 3-0 run to get back within four before Altoona started to extend its lead again. The Phoenix stayed within eight before Penn State finished the set on a 7-0 run.
- Wilson got off to its best start in the third and stayed even with the Nittany Lions through the first 18 points. At one point the Phoenix trailed 9-4 before a 5-0 which included a kill from Niki Schussler (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) put Wilson back in contention. Unfortunately the next six points went the way of the hosts, but a kill from Garcelon and an ace by Michaela Windisch (Fy., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) helped cut the deficit back down to four at 17-13. Penn State proceeded to regroup and prevented Wilson scoring consecutive points the rest of the way as it took the sweep.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson's chances were limited through the night. Garcelon, Menedis and Schussler paced the offense with three kills each. Windisch set up the attack and tallied 10 assists.
- Defensively Addie Hebert (Fy., Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) led the team on the receiving end and picked up 10 digs on the night.
- The Nittany Lions didn't have a player record more than seven kills, but had two players reach that total and had 10 different players reach the scoring column on attacks overall.
