(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The Battle of I-81 didn't go the way of Wilson as it fell to Dickinson in non-conference competition on Thursday evening. The Phoenix had one of their better sets of the season and almost evened the match in the second, but the Red Devils were able to rebound and complete a sweep.
The Basics
Scores: Wilson 0, Dickinson 3 (25-13, 26-24, 25-9)
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 0-14, Dickinson 4-7
How It Happened
- Play went back and forth at the start with Niki Schussler (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Cumberland Valley Christian) downing a pair of kills early for the Phoenix, but the Devils started to pull away with a 6-0 run that made the score 9-2. A pair of kills from Deah Menedis (Jr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) later made the score 11-5 in favor of the visitors, but Wilson couldn't get any closer the rest of the way as they went down 1-0.
- The Phoenix caught fire and came to life in the second with a 5-1 start aided by kills from Menedis, Allyson Garcelon (So., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock), and Abby Moreland (Fy., Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin). Swings from Grace Owens (Fy., Winchester, Va. / James Wood) and Moreland later put the Blue and White up 12-7. Dickinson closed within two with the next three points before Wilson responded with a Menedis kill, an Alexis Buckley (Jr., Millsboro, Del. / Indian River) ace, and a Devils error to go back up five. Dickinson mounted a comeback, but a pair of Moreland kills and one from Menedis put Wilson up 24-21. Unfortunately the Devils rallied with the next five points behind three kills and an ace.
- Dickinson fed off the momentum of the comeback and stayed hot at the start of the third with a 6-1 start. The lead extended from there on out as the visitors completed the sweep.
Inside The Numbers
- Moreland continues to improve and led the match with nine kills. She did so on 23 attempts with just three errors for a hitting percentage of .261, her second-best mark of the season thus far. Menedis followed with eight kills for the Blue and White. Setting up the attack was Michaela Windisch (Fy., Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) with 20 assists.
- Defensively Addie Hebert (Fy., Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) also had match-high numbers with 12 digs as she reached double figures once again.
- Cassidy Davis led the Red Devils with eight kills, but depth helped the visitors as 12 different players registered points on attacks.
