Maddy Gets A Hatty As Wilson Dominates Christendom

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Maddy Miller (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) recorded a hat trick as Wilson got back to .500 on the young season with a convincing win over Christendom on Monday afternoon. The Phoenix attack inundated the Crusaders defense throughout the day and outshot the visitors by 31 en route to handing them their first defeat on the year.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 6, Christendom 1

Venue: Kris's Meadow

Records: Wilson 2-2-1, Christendom 4-1-0

How It Happened
  • A flurry of goals took place at the beginning of the game with Miller starting the onslaught in the seventh minute. It was set up by Annie Smith (Fy., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) who fired a shot from outside the box that was on target with a save by the Crusaders' Anna Hsu. The ricochet bounced right back to Miller who was left just a few feet in front of the goal with an empty net and an easy put-back.
  • Christendom was able to counter five minutes later as Mary Sabados found Catherine Thomas open for a score, but Miller was able to answer just 52 seconds later on a corner kick. Miller did the honors and got a deflection off a defender for her second score of the game in the 13th minute.
  • Wilson kept the pressure on and added its third goal 24 minutes later. After Christendom failed to clear following a goal kick, Smith fired a shot from straight-away center that was initially saved, but the ball bounced back out to her and she was able to put it in on the second try.
  • Another set piece gave Wilson a 4-1 lead. Once again Miller did the honors and found Jade Wolfe (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) streaking down the middle. Wolfe was able to flick it in with the right foot in the lower 90 with just 3:23 to go in the half.
  • Miller wasn't done as she completed her hat trick in the 63rd minute. Similar to her second goal, it came on a corner kick and yet again had a Crusader defender deflect it in.
  • Halley Shaffer (So., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain), who had a hat trick of her own on Friday, completed the scoring after being close on numerous occasions throughout the game. She finally hit pay dirt after receiving a pass from Smith splitting the Crusader back line and finding the lower left 90 from the middle of the field outside the box in the 86th minute.
Inside The Numbers
  • This is the second time Miller has scored a hat trick and an assist in her career. She also accomplished the feat last season as Wilson defeated Penn State-Schuylkill on September 26.
  • Wilson outshot Christendom 34-3 overall in the game. Only two of the Crusaders' shots were on goal with Rebecca Marakovitz (Jr., New Market, Md. / Linganore) making the save and recording the win between the pipes.
  • Corners also heavily favored the Blue and White by a 13-1 margin. The Phoenix were in double digits alone in the first half with 10.
  • In three games all-time against the Crusaders, Wilson has outscored them 15-2.
Up Next
