Softball Nipped By Giants

(LA PLUME, Pa.) – Wilson dropped a pair of defensive battles to hosting Keystone in a CSAC doubleheader on warm Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix fell in the opener in one of the lowest combined scoring games of the year before almost pulling out an extra innings win in the night cap.

The Basics

Scores: Game 1 – Wilson 1, Keystone 3
Game 2 – Wilson 4, Keystone 5 (8 innings)

Venue: Edmunds Field

Records: Wilson 9-15, 3-7 CSAC; Keystone 7-13, 6-4 CSAC
How It Happened (Game 1)
  • A pitchers duel broke out in a game that ended up tied for the lowest combined score in a Phoenix game this season. Wilson ended up striking first as they scored in the opening inning. Alyssa Wenger (Jr., Chambersburg, Pa. / Chambersburg) led off the game with a single to center, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball.
  • The score remained paused until the bottom of the fourth when the Giants took advantage of a Phoenix miscue. After two of the first three Giants batters hit a pair of singles, the resulting error allowed both of them to score and take the lead.
  • Keystone was able to add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Another infield error allowed the run to score after a pair of fielder's choices and a single to left put a Giants runner on third.
Inside The Numbers (Game 1)
  • Despite taking the loss, Makenna Snodgrass (Sr., Flagstaff, Ariz. / Flagstaff) pitched one of her finest games of the season. She allowed three runs, none earned, on eight hits while striking out four in the complete game.
  • Wenger led the offense by going 1-for-2 and reached first an additional two times on walks while scoring the lone run of the game.
  • Alecia Hamilton (Sr., Canton, Ohio / GlenOak) went 2-for-3 on the day for her second multiple hit game in the last three games and her sixth multiple hit game of the season.
How It Happened (Game 2)
  • The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third when Keystone plated three in the frame. Five of the first six Giants all reached safely before the Phoenix were able to get out of the inning with no more damage after a sac fly made it 3-0.
  • The Blue and White were able to get even in the fifth. After Madison Briggs (Fy., Lock Haven, Pa. / Central Mountain) and Ashley Stevens (So., Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) both reached on a pair of base hits, Wenger brought them both home on a double. Wenger eventually stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
  • The game stayed tied and forced extra innings. With the international tiebreaker rule in place, Addyson Stewart (Fy., Felton, Del. / Lake Forest) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth thanks to a base hit by Haley Privett (Jr., Fayetteville, Pa. / Chambersburg Magnet). However, the Giants were able to tie the game up in similar fashion and eventually won the game in walk-off fashion with a sacrifice fly.
Inside The Numbers
  • Seven batters recorded hits for the Phoenix with Privett recording a multiple hit day on a 2-for-4 performance.
  • Wenger extended her hit streak to eight games, her on-base streak to 14 games, and has now scored in 16 consecutive games. Wenger has also stolen bases in five-straight games.
