McCoy's Season High Paces Wilson At Pratt

(BROOKLYN, N.Y.) – Wilson remained unbeaten in CSAC competition as it defeated Pratt Institute in straight sets on Saturday afternoon in the Big Apple. Jacob McCoy (Fy., York, Pa. / Spring Grove) easily had his best match of the season with 11 kills to lead the Phoenix offense to victory.

The Basics

Scores: Wilson 3, Pratt 0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-22)

Venue: Pratt Institute ARC

Records: Wilson 6-10, 2-0 CSAC; Pratt 2-12, 0-3 CSAC

How It Happened
  • Wilson didn't waste any time asserting itself as the Phoenix jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Saria Alshaikhali (Jr., Jeddah, Saudi Arabia / Hayfield) set the tone with a kill on the opening point. The Blue and Black extended their lead with a Demetrius Simmons (Fy., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Mechanicsburg) ace and a kill from Xavier Webber (Fy., Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Central Dauphin East). Kills from McCoy and Wyatt Tribett (So., Myersville, Md. / Middletown) helped make it 9-3. Later in the set another Simmons attack scored to put Wilson up 19-12, its largest advantage of the set.
  • The Phoenix had a similar start in the second as kills from Webber and McCoy along with a Simmons ace helped put the Phoenix in front 6-1. A 4-1 run gave the Cannoneers some short-lived momentum to get back within three at 9-6, but the Phoenix regained control for good with a 8-0 run with a pair of Alshaikhali kills pacing the rally. Pratt strung together the next four points to make it 17-10 and once again to make it 23-17, but the deficit was too much to overcome for the hosts.
  • Wilson opened the third with yet another solid start, going up 5-0 thanks to a pair of Alshaikhali aces and kills from Webber and Simmons. Pratt managed to rally once again, but came up just short of tying the match at 10-9. Pratt stayed within one as late as 17-16, but could never get even with the Phoenix. An error by Pratt, a Simmons kill, and a bad set by Pratt kept the Cannoneers at bay and Wilson was able to solidify the sweep with a kill from Ian Ruiz (Jr., Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico / Santa Maria del Camino).
Inside The Numbers
  • Not only did McCoy lead the match with 11 kills, he did so with incredible precision as he hit .474 on the afternoon. He did so on 19 attempts and just two errors.
  • Simmons and Webber were right behind him with nine kills. Simmons added a block and four digs while Webber provided six pick ups and an ace.
  • Simmons was even more precise than McCoy on his attempts as he hit .600 on the day.
  • Jonathan Minnick (So., Dublin, Va. / New River CC) set up the offense with 35 assists.
  • Wilson limited the Cannoneers to just 15 kills, by far the fewest by any opponent of the Phoenix this season. The previous low was 21 set in a win against Russell Sage.
  • The .000 hitting percentage by Pratt was the second-lowest by any of Wilson's opponents this season.
