(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – After the first wave of league play, Wilson hosted a high-octane Shenandoah squad for a non-conference clash at the Gannett Field House on Thursday evening. The Phoenix couldn't overcome the size and depth of the Hornets as the visitors took an early lead en route to the win.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 50, Shenandoah 75
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 2-6, Shenandoah 8-2
How It Happened
- Shenandoah rushed out to an early lead thanks to hitting five of its first seven field goal attempts while executing nearly impenetrable defense that held Wilson off the scoreboard for the first 3:33 before Lae Black (So., Laurel, Md. / Meade) ended the drought with a layup. Although the Hornets were able to push the lead back up, the Phoenix didn't give up and got hot down the stretch as a pair of Mackenzie Caldwell-Degnon (Fy., Rockville, Md. / Richard Montgomery) free throws were sandwiched between jumpers from Allie Cullison (Jr., Westminster, Md. / Winters Mill / Kean) and Jewels Torres (So., York, Pa. / West York) put Wilson on a 6-0 run. After a Hornets layup, Cullison added two of her own, both on assists from Yaya Cannon (Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic / Elizabethtown) to cut the deficit to 21-16.
- Momentum quickly flipped back to the Shenandoah side as the Hornets opened the second 10-0 run. It started their best quarter of the game as they shot 52.6% (10-of-19). On the opposite side the Phoenix struggled as Shenandoah took a 46-22 lead into the half.
- Cullison had a strong fourth quarter as she totaled eight points alone in the frame. It helped Wilson win the period 18-12, but the Hornets were too far ahead as they secured the win.
Inside The Numbers
- Cullison led all scorers with 20 points. She was 8-for-20 from the field and faired well on the glass with seven rebounds.
- Two others joined her in double figures. Black was one of them as she totaled 11 points. She recorded her first double double of the year as she pulled down a game-high 15 boards.
- Torres equaled her with 11 points. It was a season-best and matched her career-high set last season against Saint Elizabeth on January 11.
- Shenandoah was led by Shawnise Campbell who totaled 14 points. She added five rebounds and controlled the inside with five blocks. Terese Greene also scored in double-figures with 11 points. Combined Campbell and Green were 11-for-18 from the field.
