(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The women's volleyball season came to a close as Wilson dropped the finale to Keystone in four sets on Halloween evening. The Phoenix put up one of their best fights of the season by taking the opening set and made the Giants work hard for the win as the visitors narrowly took games three and four.
The Basics
Scores: Wilson 1, Keystone 3 (21-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-21)
Venue: Gannett Memorial Field House
Records: Wilson 2-24, Keystone 14-9
How It Happened
- Action was back-and-forth at the start with teams splitting the opening 10 points evenly. The Giants appeared to take control of the set with a 9-2 run to go up 14-7. Abby Moreland (FY, Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) had other ideas as her kill sparked a 7-0 run that featured three aces from her as well to tie the set and put the Phoenix back into contention. While the Giants pulled back ahead at 19-17, Wilson answered with the next four points on a Michaela Windisch (FY, Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) kill, an Allyson Garcelon (So., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Suquehannock) block, a Moreland kill, and a bad Giants set. Soon after Wilson was able to close the game with an ace from Windisch and a kill from Moreland.
- Another back-and-forth start took place at the beginning of the second with teams splitting the opening 12 points. However, the 12th point belonged to Keystone and set off a 6-0 rally that put the Giants in front. This time the Phoenix were unable to bounce back as the Giants evened the match.
- Kills by Garcelon and Moreland helped the Phoenix tie the third set at 7-all before a 9-2 run put the Giants in front 16-9. Kills from Moreland, Deah Menedis (Jr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin), and a pair of Moreland aces allowed Wilson to climb back in, but it would be the closest the Phoenix could get the rest of the way.
- Wilson stayed relentless and looked to make Keystone go the distance. A pair of Giants miscues and an Addie Hebert (FY, Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) ace tied the game at 12-all, and a Garcelon kill eventually put Wilson up 15-14 five points later. Attacks from Maddie Watson (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Mennonite) and Menedis both gave the Phoenix two point leads later in the set, but the Giants were able to counter and close the night with a 7-1 run for the match win.
Inside The Numbers
- Moreland led the Phoenix attack with 13 kills. She equaled Keystone's Rebecca Jackson for match-high honors. Menedis joined Moreland in double figures with 11 kills. Both recorded double doubles as Moreland picked up 12 digs and Menedis added 10.
- Hebert led the Phoenix on the back line with 17 digs. Windisch picked up 10 to complete the Phoenix quartet in double figures.
- Windisch set up the attack with 30 assists.
- Moreland laid down six aces on the evening for a new season-high. The total gave her over 50 for the season. She finished the regular season in the top 10 overall in the league with 0.59 per set and is third in the division with 51 total for the year.
