(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – The penultimate home match of the women's volleyball regular season pitted Wilson against Notre Dame on Wednesday evening. The Gators proved too much for the Phoenix to overcome and took the contest in straight sets.
The Basics
Scores: Wilson 0, Notre Dame 3 (25-12, 25-20, 25-10)
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 2-22, 2-5 Skye; Notre Dame 12-9, 6-1 Skye
How It Happened
- The visitors exerted their dominance early as they jumped out to a 6-1 lead to open the night. A service error and a Michaela Windisch (FY, Westminster, Md. / Catoctin) kill allowed the Blue and White to climb back into the set shortly at 6-3, but the Gators started to extend the lead once again. A kill and an ace from Allyson Garcelon (So., Shrewsbury, Pa. / Susquehannock) helped generate some momentum for the Phoenix as they cut the deficit to 14-8 before the Gators closed the game on an 11-4 run.
- The second set started out like it would be more of the same as NDMU went up 6-1 to start, but Wilson fought back to make it close throughout the frame. Kills from Abby Moreland (FY, Sabillasville, Md. / Catoctin) and Maddie Watson (So., Lancaster, Pa. / Lancaster Mennonite) fueled a 5-1 run by the Phoenix as they trimmed the deficit to 13-11. While the Gators countered with the next three points, the Phoenix answered with the following three on kills from Deah Menedis (Jr., Reisterstown, Md. / Franklin) and Garcelon to make the score 16-14. A 4-0 run sparked by a Moreland kill put Wilson back in contention at 22-20, but after a timeout the Gators were able to close the set and take the 2-0 lead.
- The third saw the Gators again go out to a 6-1 lead, and while a Moreland ace opened a short 3-0 run by Wilson, Notre Dame quickly regained momentum and pushed its lead to double digits. The Phoenix were unable to put a dent in the deficit as the Gators took the sweep.
Inside The Numbers
- Garcelon had one of her finest outings offensively as she led the team with six kills. She did so with no errors on 11 attempts for a hitting percentage of .545, the best by anyone that led the team in a match this season.
- Defensively the Phoenix were paced by Addie Hebert (FY, Gettysburg, Pa. / Gettysburg) who picked up a dozen on the evening to lead all players.
