Men's Soccer Draws With Giants

(LA PLUME, Pa.) – Another first took place for the Wilson men's soccer program as it drew a result against Keystone in United East Skye Division on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix had faced defeat at the hands of the Giants in five prior meetings, and while this contest wasn't a victory for the Blue and White, they were still able to head home with a draw and a point in the standings.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 2, Keystone 2

Venue: Keystone Turf Field

Records: Wilson 3-10-3, 1-3-3 Skye; Keystone 3-11-2, 3-3-1

How It Happened
  • Wilson had the hot start as Eric Arbogast (FY, Duncansville, Pa. / Hollidaysburg) had a quick shot on goal just 2:27 into the contest. Although it was saved, the Phoenix kept up the pressure and capitalized just over two minutes later as Luis Jimenez (FY, Carabobo, Venezuela / Taylor Allderdice) found the back of the net for the game's first goal.
  • Keystone was able to counter moments later as Hernan Godoy scored on an assist from Morade Mama in the 12th minute. The Giants attempted to take the lead with another shot in the 14th minute, but Gerson Navarro (FY, Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park) provided the save.
  • Navarro was instrumental in keeping the game even late in the frame as two of three Giants shots required his presence for the save. That allowed Ethan Locklear (FY, White Marsh, Md. / Sparrows Point) to score a go-ahead goal in the 43rd minute on an assist from Jace Williams (FY, Chesapeake, Va. / Hickory) to give Wilson a 2-1 lead at the break.
  • Teams exchanged shots at the start of the second half. Keystone had a few more chances during that time and it eventually paid off as Trevor Lagarde scored the equalizer on an assist from CJ Lampert in the 63rd minute. Despite 10 shots combined between both teams the rest of the way, the game ended in a draw.
Inside The Numbers
  • Keystone held the shot advantage at 16-12, while shots on goal were more evenly distributed with a 8-7 lead for the Giants. Navarro finished the day with six saves, two shy of his season-best.
  • Jimenez has been on a hot streak as of late with goals in three consecutive games.
  • Locklear's goal was his second of the season. He also found the back of the net in last month's win at Gallaudet.
  • Williams' helper was his first assist of the season. He now has seven points in his rookie campaign.
  • Wilson's draw was its first tie against the Giants. The previous five contests all resulted in close defeats for the Phoenix.
Up Next
Wilson will close the regular season with another quality opponent as it hosts Cairn on Wednesday. The Highlanders are undefeated in divisional play with a 5-0-2 record. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
