(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Another record was broken as Wilson set the single season wins mark in its NCAA era with a victory over Keystone on a grey Wednesday afternoon
. It was win No. 13 for the Phoenix, surpassing the previous mark of 12 set last season.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 4, Keystone 0
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 13-3-1, 7-0-0 Skye; Keystone 3-10-0, 2-5-0 Skye
How It Happened
- The tone was set right from the start as Maddy Miller (So., Dillsburg, Pa. / Northern) and Julia Elliott (Jr., Annapolis, Md. / Broadneck) had shots on goal in the first 70 seconds of the game. While both were saved by Giants keeper Annie Metzger, it was a sign of things to come as the Phoenix attack would inundate her through the course of the game.
- The first goal came in the 15th minute with a bit of luck as Jade Wolfe (Jr., Mercersburg, Pa. / James Buchanan) had possession in the right corner. With a tough angle she sent the ball towards the goal and got a lucky bounce as a Keystone defender had a failed clear attempt that went into the net.
- Halley Shaffer (So., Sunbury, Pa. / Line Mountain) eventually found the back of the net to make it 2-0 in the 38th minute. Driving across through the box from left to right, she was able to avoid a couple of defenders and find the lower left 90 for the score.
- Shaffer appeared to score a second goal early in the second half, but it was negated from the Phoenix being offsides. She eventually made up for it by using her speed to drive by the Giants back line once again and finding the back of the net in the 76th minute.
- Six minutes later Annie Smith (FY, Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) put the finishing touches on the game. Driving in from the left corner the Giants defense forced a deflection, but Smith was able to corral the ball in the box and fire it past the keeper to set the final score.
Inside The Numbers
- With the clean sheet, Wilson now has shutouts in four consecutive games and 11 overall for the season. That also sets a new program record after surpassing last year's mark of 10.
- While it was a blanking for the defense, its job was relatively easy as the offense controlled possession for most of the afternoon. As a result Wilson outshot the Giants 46-0 with 28 shots on goal. Shaffer was responsible for the most amongst the team as she chalked up a baker's dozen.
- Shaffer's pair of goals give her 22 for the season to put her back in third in Division III.
- Smith's score gives her 14 on the season. That matches the record for a first year player set by Mary Miller in 2004.
- Wolfe's score is her third of the season and first since September 30 at Valley Forge.
For The Record
- With the win, Wilson has now defeated Keystone in five-straight contests and leads the all-time series now 5-1. It's also the second consecutive shutout against the Giants after defeating them 3-0 in the 2022 CSAC Championship quarterfinals on Kris's Meadow.
