(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Emotions were high as Wilson entertained St. Elizabeth in Skye Division action for Senior Day on a soggy Saturday. While the Phoenix couldn't hand the Eagles their first divisional loss and just second of the season, they were able to stay even with them to force a draw on Wilson Weekend.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 2, St. Elizabeth 2
Venue: Kris's Meadow
Records: Wilson 2-10-2, 0-3-2 Skye; St. Elizabeth 9-1-3, 3-0-2 Skye
How It Happened
- Wilson came out of the gates firing with two close opportunities in the first two minutes of the game. Ian Ruiz (Sr., Trujillo, Puerto Rico / Colegio Santa Maria del Camino) had the first chance taking a pass up the middle and lacing a shot just right of the frame 54 seconds into the contest. Connor Bowers (Sr., Hagerstown, Md. / North Hagerstown) was able to break through the right side a minute later and miss just left 63 seconds later.
- While it appeared the Phoenix had the momentum, that quickly changed in the fourth minute when the Eagles were fouled in the right corner of the box. Alejando Lopez was awarded a free kick and went high center on the goal.
- The Eagles proceeded to keep the pressure on and had the bulk of the offensive chances the rest of the half. Two of them were on target with Gerson Navarro (FY, Manassas Park, Va. / Manassas Park) making acrobatic saves to keep the deficit at one. It proved beneficial and was a sign of things to come as teams headed to the halftime break.
- Teams exchanged a pair of shots in the first 11 minutes to start the second. Action went back-and-forth until Luis Jiminez (FY, Carabobo, Venezuela / Taylor Allerdice) scored an equalizer in the 69th minute. Brian Mulholland (So., Oracle, Ariz. / Canyon del Oro) set it up with a cross from the right corner that was perfectly place to the center of the box where Jiminez headed it to the bottom right corner.
- The high energy didn't last long as the Eagles were quick to answer with crossing header of their own. Kevin Vasquez sent in the ball from the left side and found Sebastian Londono open on the near post. Londono was able to head the ball over the keeper into the right side for a 2-1 lead.
- Undeterred, Wilson didn't get deflated and was able to battle back once again. Jiminez and Mulholland paired up once again, but this time reversing roles. Jiminez took the ball up the left side before centering it near the end line. Mulholland was waiting in the center of the box and was able to get an easy touch to tie the game one again in the 78th minute.
- The Eagles tried desperately to get a game winner in the final 10 minutes with five shots during that span. Two were on goal from nearly point blank range, but Navarro made spectacular saves on both to keep the game even.
Inside The Numbers
- Jiminez's first points of his college career proved to be pivotal as both were involved in game-tying goals.
- Mulholland now has six goals and 13 points on the season.
- Navarro had easily his best game of the three appearances he's had this year and made eight saves, easily the most he's had in one outing.
