The Basics
Score: Wilson 66 St. Elizabeth 76
Venue: Gannett Field House
Records: Wilson 7-8, 1-3 CSAC; St. Elizabeth 5-10, 2-2 CSAC
How It Happened
- Wilson got off to a fast start largely in part because of Antonio Bussey (Sr., Aiken, S.C. / Aiken / Claflin) who immediately went to work on the inside with eight points in the first 3:35 of the game. That along with a Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac / Bryant and Stratton) deuce and 3-pointer gave the Phoenix a 13-6 lead just 4:25 into the game after they started the game 6-of-8 from the field. It was their largest lead of the game which they equaled three other times throughout the half, the last of which was a dunk by Bussey on a dish from Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park) to make the score 26-19 with 6:12 to go in the first.
- The Eagles were able to flip the script and came back to take the lead in the final minute of the opening frame and finished the half on a 15-5 run to go up 34-31 at halftime.
- The second half saw St. Elizabeth keep the momentum and built up a six-point lead after a Pierre Harden jumper made the score 49-43 with 12:25 left in regulation. The Phoenix were able to answer and regained the lead on a Marcus Stephens (Gr., Goldsboro, N.C. / C.D. Hylton) 3-pointer put the score at 52-51 just 2:15 later. A Darren Green (So., Silver Spring, Md. / Springbrook) layup later made the score 61-56 in favor of Wilson with 6:42 to go.
- Unfortunately St. Elizabeth was able to answer and scored the next six points to spark a 12-2 run to go up five. Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) struck back with a triple to cut the deficit to 68-66, but the Phoenix were held scoreless for the final 2:28 of in-game action.
