GALLOWAY, N.J, - The Wilson College men's basketball team took on the Ospreys of Stockton University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship, earlier this afternoon. The Phoenix (18-8, 12-2 CSAC) put on a terrific performance, but fell to the Ospreys (25-4, 15-3 NJAC) by a final score of 87-52, ending the historic season for the men's basketball team.
How It Happened: Stockton wasted no time getting started, jumping out to a 9-0 lead in the opening minutes of play. Senior
Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD., Northwest HS) managed to stop the run with a jumper in the paint, followed by a quick jumper from junior
Darryl Garib (Dallas, TX., Forest Park) off an Ospreys turnover that cut the deficit to five points, 9-4. Stockton managed to extend their lead up to eight before Wilson started to chip away with layups from juniors
Daeshaun Johnson (Waldorf, MD, St. Charles HS) and
Antonio Bussey (Aiken, SC, Claflin Univ.), cutting the difference to four points with thirteen minutes left in the first half. Stockton continued to score, but so did
Garib, who drained three straight buckets that cut the deficit to one point, 16-15. The Ospreys then managed to notch six unanswered points before
Bussey ended the run with a dunk, followed by a foul shot from
Thomas, bringing the score to 31-18 in Stockton's favor, with just under five minutes left in the opening half. The Phoenix hung tough but went into halftime trailing, 41-20. In the second half, junior
Warrick Godwin Jr. (Largo, MD, College of So. MD) got things going with a shot from beyond the arc, assisted by
Johnson. Moments later,
Godwin Jr. drilled another three, followed by a jumper from
Bussey as Wilson started to make some noise early.
Bussey added one more layup before
Garib added two foul shots as the Phoenix strung together a nine-point run. The Phoenix hung tough and never wavered but could not overcome the early deficit as they fell by a final score of 87-52.
Inside The Box Score: Bussey led Wilson with 13 points while tallying nine rebounds and two blocks.
Garib and
Godwin Jr. both chipped in ten points while grabbing five and seven rebounds, respectively. Seven others went on to add points in the game as the Phoenix finished with 26 points in the paint and ten-second chance points.
