Balanced Mary Baldwin Attack Downs Men's Basketball

(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – In its final home game of the calendar year, Wilson fell to an offensively sound Mary Baldwin squad on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix shot well from the field as they made over 50% of their shots, but turnovers hurt as the Fighting Squirrels converted on the opposite end.

The Basics

Score: Wilson 74, Mary Baldwin 90

Venue: Gannett Field House

Records: Wilson 3-4, Mary Baldwin 4-5

How It Happened
  • A couple of driving layups by Gary Robertson (Jr., Washington D.C. / Potomac) sandwiched around a Jordan Miles (Sr., Waldorf, Md. / Westlake) 3-pointer gave Wilson an early 7-5 lead before the Squirrels made their move with an 18-4 run to go up 12. The Phoenix clawed back into the game with a 12-6 run of their own capped by layups from Marcus Stephens (Gr., Goldsboro, N.C. / C.D. Hylton / Virginia Wesleyan) and Darryl Garib (Sr., Dallas, Texas / Forest Park). However, it was the closest they could get to Mary Baldwin in the first half. The visitors eventually built up a 16-point advantage before the Phoenix chopped the deficit down to 11 points by halftime thanks to a buzzer-beating layup by Robertson.
  • The momentum carried into the second half as Wilson was able to get within single digits once again. Free throws by Rick Godwin Jr. (Sr., Largo, Md. / Largo / Southern Maryland) followed by buckets by Garib and Robertson put the score at 54-49 just 2:19 into the second half. The Squirrels were able to keep the Phoenix at bay as the visitors scored the next seven points to go back up by 12. Wilson was able to get back within three possessions a few times the rest of the way, but could get no closer as Mary Baldwin led by as many as 21.
Inside The Numbers
  • Garib led all scorers with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-18 from the field. He also led both teams on the glass with eight rebounds. Robertson joined him in the 20-point club with 21 markers as he was 9-of-12 from the field.
  • Wilson shot 50.8% overall on the day with 30 makes on 59 attempts. It's the most field goals the Phoenix have made in a single game this season and just .001 behind their best shooting night from the field.
  • Both teams shot exceptionally well in the opening half. Wilson made 17-of-32 for 53.1%, while Mary Baldwin made 19-of-36 for 52.8%. The Squirrels led at the break, though, by a 54-43 count.
  • Wilson controlled the glass by a rebounding margin of 41-29, but turnovers hurt the Phoenix as 20 miscues led to 26 MBU points. On the opposite end, the Squirrels turned the ball over just five times leading to seven Phoenix points.
  • Four Squirrels scored in double-figures. Brett Asbury, Quentin Hart and Vernon Fraley led the way as all three tallied 19 points.
Up Next
Wilson will now prep for a grueling six-game road slate that will carry on until the new year. Up first on the docket will be a trip to Messiah this Wednesday. Tip-off with the Falcons is set for 6 p.m.
