(CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.) – Top-seeded Wilson will defend its title Saturday as it defeated Sweet Briar in the CSAC Tournament semifinals on Wednesday afternoon. It was the third meeting between the Phoenix and Vixens this season and Wilson was able to take the season sweep with another home shutout.
The Basics
Score: No. 1 Wilson 3, No. 4 Sweet Briar 0
Venue: Wilson Hockey Field
Records: No. 1 Wilson 11-3, No. 4 Sweet Briar 7-10
How It Happened:
- Both defenses were strong early as the first quarter remained scoreless. Wilson had most of the pressure and got off four shots, but just one was on goal. On the opposite end, the Phoenix midfield and defenders were nearly impenetrable as Sweet Briar was almost unable to advance to ball to its offensive zone.
- Wilson eventually struck first nearly two minutes into the second quarter after it was awarded a penalty stroke. Abigail Rosenberry (Sr., Shippensburg, Pa. / Shippensburg) was true on the shot and provided the 1-0 lead which held through halftime.
- A penalty corner helped lead to the second goal. Paige Ney (Fy., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville) did the honors this time as she took the pass from Elizabeth Landon (Fy., West Grove, Pa. / Avon Grove) and scored on the right side of the goaltender five minutes into the third period.
- A flurry of shots lead to the third goal with Rosenberry sparking the outburst with the first shot. Although it was blocked, Alexis Pflumm (Sr., Camden, Del. / Caesar Rodney) found herself with possession and took another attempt. It was saved, but the rebound came back to Pflumm and she was able to bury a second attempt for a 3-0 lead.
Inside The Numbers
- Wilson dominated possession throughout the game. In total the Phoenix outshot the Vixens 23-1. Of those 23, 18 were on goal. While Sweet Briar did get off one shot, it was blocked by the stout Phoenix back line led by Kylie Greek (Sr., Harrington, Del. / Lake Forest), Hailey Steele (So., Biglerville, Pa. / Biglerville), and Hannah Aker (So., Yardley, Pa. / Pennsbury).
- Allyson Shindler (Sr., Manchester, Pa. / Northeastern) now has five shutouts on the season and has shared three more for the Phoenix.
- Corners also favored Wilson by a 10-0 advantage.
- Ney's goal gives her 13 for the season. Pflumm's score keeps her close with Ney at 12. Rosenberry's score was her fifth of the season.
- Rosenberry is now 2-for-2 on penalty strokes this season.
