(BALTIMORE) – An early second half goal and a strong midfield helped keep Wilson's unbeaten streak intact as it defeated Notre Dame of Maryland on a breezy Wednesday.
Morgan Wineburg (Sr., Phoenixville, Pa. / Phoenixville) provided the heroics for the Phoenix as she was the lone player to find the back of the net in the clean sheet over the Gators.
The Basics
Score: Wilson 1, Notre Dame of Maryland 0
Venue: Alumnae Field
Records: Wilson 7-3-2, 4-0-1; Notre Dame of Maryland 3-5, 2-3
How It Happened
- While the score may have indicated a defensive battle took place, it was mostly one-sided as the Phoenix controlled possession for most of the game. They pressured the Gators throughout and able to get nine shots off in the opening 45. The Gators' back line did create some problems for Wilson, however, as none of them were on goal. On the opposite end, Wilson's midfield made it difficult for Notre Dame to control the ball. As a result the Gators were left without a shot in the first half.
- The second half started off with a bang for the Phoenix. Wineburg fired a shot from the top of the box just 14 seconds in. Although it wasn't on target, she found herself with possession once again and sailed it to the upper left 90 for the goal just 57 seconds into the frame.
- The Phoenix kept the shots fine-tuned and fired off 11 more the rest of the way with seven of them on goal, but all of them were saved.
- On the opposite side the Gators were eventually able to take a shot, their only one of the game, but it wasn't on target.
Inside The Numbers
- Wineburg's goal was her second of the season. She was also responsible for the game-winning goal in a 3-1 win back on September 24 against Clarks Summit.
- Wilson outshot the Gators 22-1 overall in the game and 8-0 in shots on goal. All eight shots on goal took place in the second half.
- In addition to shot dominance, the Phoenix inundated the Gators with set piece attempts as well with a 15-1 advantage on corner kicks.
- The Phoenix have now gone unbeaten in their last seven games with wins in six of them.
- Wilson has won its last three by a combined score of 16-2.
