Phoenix Falter to Falcons

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play earlier this evening, facing off against the Falcons of Cedar Crest College. The Phoenix (0-8, 0-1 CSAC) fought hard but were defeated by the Falcons (8-5, 1-0 CSAC) by a final score of 3-0, with set scores of 25-20, 26-24, and 25-20.

Inside the Box Score: Cedar Crest opened the first set on a 7-1 run before Wilson started to fight their way back in the set, eventually cutting the deficit to 11-10. The two opponents spent the rest of the set battling for the lead, but the Falcons took the first set by a score of 25-20. In the second set, Wilson hung tough and knotted the set up at 9-9 before jumping on a 6-2 run that pushed them in front, 15-11. Later in the set, after Cedar Crest tied things up at 17, the Phoenix started another run that extended their lead to 21-17. Wilson continued to duel but stalled out at 24 points, as the Falcons took the second set by a score of 26-24. In the final set, Wilson fought valiantly, keeping the score close throughout. Later, with the Phoenix on top, 17-15, Cedar Crest started a 9-0 run that flipped the score and put them in front, 24-17, taking the final set 25-20. 

Inside the Box Score: Junior Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) paced the offense with 12 kills and two service aces, while senior Tia Jones (Springfield, VA., Lake Braddock) tallied eight. Freshman Deah Menedis (Reisterstown, MD, Franklin High) added seven kills and senior Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) rounded out the scoring with six kills and two aces. Junior Elizabeth Vuxta (Elizabethtown, PA., Elizabethtown) totaled a season-high 29 assists. Altogether, Wilson collected 33 kills on 85 attempts against 13 errors while their opponents finished with 40 kills on 91 attempts against 15 errors. 

Up Next: The Phoenix continue CSAC play on Saturday, October 2, where they will face Clarks Summit University (1-11, 0-0 CSAC) starting at 11:00 a.m.
