Field Hockey Tames Panthers

FERRUM, Va. - The Wilson College field hockey team continued its hot start to the season with a road victory this afternoon against Ferrum College. The Phoenix (9-0) defeated the Panthers (3-6) by a final score of 5-0 to remain unbeaten and improve their record to 9-0 on the season. 

How It Happened: Just over three minutes into the contest, super senior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) put the Phoenix on the board as she took a pass from super senior Allison Reber (Narvon, PA., Garden Spot) and rattled the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead. One minute later, senior Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West) took aim on goal, but the Panthers goalie came up with the save. The third shot on goal for the Phoenix in the opening six minutes came courtesy of freshman Brea Kelso (Shippensburg, PA, Shippensburg), who took a pass from sophomore Hayley Koller (Atglen, PA, Octorara) and beat the keeper for a 2-0 advantage. The Panthers tried to quickly respond and fired their first shot on goal, however super senior Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) continued to be strong in goal with a save to keep the hosts off the board. In the second period, the Phoenix offense continued its dominance of the Panthers as freshman Anna Frohm (Shippensburg, PA, Shippensburg) connected on her second goal of the season with an assist from Kelso to push the lead to 3-0. Later in the period, the Phoenix fired three straight shots on goal with Sheaffer and junior Rachael Rementer (West Chester, PA., Henderson) getting denied, but freshman Emma Bounds (Carlisle, PA, Boiling Springs) was able to gather a rebound and put it in goal for a 4-0 lead. With less than a minute to go in the opening half, Frohm and Kelso connected again as Frohm tallied her second goal of the match and her third of the season to push the Phoenix lead to 5-0 at halftime. During the third period, the Phoenix defense didn't allow a Panthers shot attempt, while the offense attempted four shots but couldn't add to their lead. The fourth period nearly mirrored the third as the Phoenix defense didn't allow another shot attempt and the offense played well but couldn't add to the lead as the team cruised to a 5-0 victory. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix have scored first in every match this season and have never trailed in any of their nine contests. Nayadley has only allowed 2 goals in her last 150 minutes of time in goal. Singer has scored at least 1 goal in 8 of the 9 contests this season. The Phoenix out shot the Panthers 18-3 including a 11-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Phoenix also enjoyed a 15-2 edge in penalty corners.
